  Things to do in Singburi

Wat Pranon Chaksi (temple)

The most important temple in Sing Buri as they have the second longest reclining Buddha in Thailand here (47.40 m.) It was built since the 2nd Capital city of Thailand (Ayuthaya period) Someone said it made of real gold inside the Buddha body. This temple is opened everyday and only about 10 minutes from the town.

"Bang Rachan" monument

Bang Rachan is the name of a small village in Sing Buri but it symbolizes the province as its famous because of the people who had such a brave heart. About 15th A.C. Bang Rachan villagers fought against Burma to protect Siam but everyone in this village died. That is why Sing Buri praise them as heros of this country. The strong people on the monument are of leaders and brave fighters of Bang Rachan. The people of Sing Buri believe their souls still protect them to this day.

Wat Sawang Arom

This temple is situated in the town. It is a centre for Buddha image sculpture. The technique was handed down from the Ban Chang Lo School in Thon Buri. A collection of 300 Nang Yai or shadow play figures at this temple is considered the most complete in Thailand. Nang Yai literally means "large shadow pupet".It is a high art form that originated the beginning of the 15th century A.D.. Nang Yai performance was a popula means of entertainment during Ayutthaya period and was mentioned in a poetry called Bunnovat Khamchan written by a Buddhist monk named Mahanak in around A.D. 175131758 or during the late reihn of King Boromakot. Nang Yai is originally a prototype of modern mask dance, which incorporates various episodes of an Indian epic called Ramakian(in Thai) or Ramayana (in Indian version).Nang Yai performance also adopts Ramakien as a leading story and the performance is episodic in each show. The performance of large shadow puppet is traditionally held in open spaces such as lawn or village dirt space. The main components of Nag Yai compose of a 16*6 white screen held by four bamboo or wood poles on each side. The screen is trimmed by red strip. Behind the screen strands a tinder or a bonfire lightened up to reflect the shadows of the puppet. During the course of the show there is a Thai music band that plays music in accordance with each episode of the performance. Also important in each shaow is dubber The puppet figures are made from cow or buffalo hide perforated into different characters in Ramakien story. Each puppet weights approximately 3-4 kg. The biggest puppet is that chararterize a place, weighing around 5-7 kg. There is doubt that why large shadow puppet performer should be male and must be strong enough to hold the puppet through the course of performance period.

In Buri Museum

There are several exquisite archaeological items such as King Rama V's palaquin, large shadow play characters of Wat PraSuk, green stone Buddha image, and others. Near the museum lies Wat Bot, an old monastery having the most unusual style of construction by using iron railway bars as the core of the lower part and the entire ubosot (main chapel) is of wooden work having splendid craftsmanship on its carved door and window panels.

Volunteer Temple School Bang Rachan

Volunteer to assist the local community through teaching primarily English, a skill in high demand in rural Thailand, due to the opportunities it can bring about.

The main target group of the educational activities is poor children (mainly primary school students and also some in secondary schools), as their lives in most instances can be difficult and disheartening. We are looking for people who can stimulate self-confidence which promotes happiness.

You don't have to be a teacher! Just need to show a willingness to teach English by simply giving students a chance to listen to speak English! The local English teaching style is mostly based on root learning. Learning by heart, learning grammar, with opportunities to improve conversational skills.

Things to do in Lopburi about 30 Km from Singburi

Prang Sam Yot

This prang is located opposite the railway line and is literally teaming with monkeys so be careful! There are 3 prangs in a row which are connected and accessed together. They are built out of laterite sandstone and decorated with stucco and are Lopburi's most famous sight except for the monkeys, of course. It used to be a Hindu temple with the three towers symbolizing the Hindu Trimurti of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Now two of them contain Lopburi-style Buddha images.Open: 8am-6pm. Admission: 30 baht.

"Sunflower" festival

The Toong Dok Tantawan sunflower festival in Lopburi begins from November through to December every year. The cold weather during this period is between 20 to 30 degrees making  the flowers more beautiful. About 30 km along Lopburi road is Tombon Chong Sarika home of the largest sunflower fields in Thailand. This season is the perfect time to be outdoors enjoying the many fields of gold and fresh air.

Prang Khaek

Must-See site in Lop Buri old town. It stands at a little corner of the old town, though one should not have any problem finding it after Prang Sam Yot by walking on Wichayen Road. This one is believed to date waay back to the 8th century. One thing to note is that there seems to be a wood support for this prang to prevent it from falling down, so careful there!

Phra Narai Rajanivet (King Narai 's Palace)

Built by King Narai (Ayutthaya period) in 2209 B.E. This palace was so important in King Narais reign, he stayed here almost the year and returned to Ayutthaya in the rainy season only. In his palace , they're so many buildings which be as ruins nowadays, separated to 2 parts ,the front part are water tank, Royal storage buildings, the Reception Hall for Foreign Visitors and another hall. The inner part is the main area with the principal buildings ,the Dusit Sawan Thaya Mahaprasat Hall where the Chevalier de Chaumont presented the letter of Louis XIV to King Narai. And Suthasawan Hall where was the relaxation place of the King. After 2231 B.E.,Lopburi was abandoned . When Ratanakosin period, the King Mongkut (Rama IV) came to restore this palace. He built a new hall and restored some buildings in 2399 B.E. and named the palace Phra Narai Rajanivet. Opened everyday 7.00am-5.30 pm.

San Phra Kan

This is a small shrine that is located in the middle of a roundabout on the other side of the railway track from the Old Town, near Prang Sam Yot. It used to be a single Khmer-style prang that dates from the 13th century but has since fallen apart. There is a modern shrine with four staircases which feature monkey’s statues at the foot of each one. Stalls sell offerings to be dedicated at the shrine, and food and drink. The monkeys eat the food, drink, offerings and anything else going so watch out.

Wat Sao Thong

This working temple is a third-tier royal temple located near the royal palace and river. In a map made by French engineers, the site is described as a residence for Persians, with a mosque which is the present location of the royal assembly hall. This temple is unique because of its late Ayutthaya architecture. The main Buddha image is 6 meters wide and 9 meters high and is sacred to the people of the town.

Wat Kawisararam Ratchaworawihan

This royal temple is located just south of the royal palace complex and was originally named Wat Khwit. Towards the end of the reign of King Narai there was civil unrest. While the king was gravely ill, loyal servants sought royal permission to be ordained here. The king allowed this and gave sets of monk’s robes and necessary articles required by Buddhist monks, as well as presiding over the ordination ceremony for his servants. The king gave one of his buildings from the palace to be the site of the ceremony. This is a rare case for a temple to be inside a palace and remained the case until the time of King Rama IV who separated it and renamed the temple to its present day name.

Things to do in Ayuthaya about 70 Km from Singburi

Ayuthya is the second kingdom of ancient Thailand after Sukhothai.

Hua Rau Market

Hua Rau or Hua Ro covered market is located on the most northern tip of the island city, where once the Maha Chai fortress stood. The fortress played an important role in the wars against the Birmese, but now its remains lie buried and only a commemorative wall points to its former existence. The present buildings of the market were remodeled between 1967 and 1984, but the history of the market goes back at least 200 years. On this most northern bank of Lop Buri river fresh food was brought in from the countryside. The word Rau refers to a wooden barrier in the river intended to reduce the speed of the current and so prevent damage to the banks. It is believed that a long time a ago, when the market consisted of wooden two-story buildings, a fire was put out by the goddess Jao Mae Ton Chan. She was seen as a woman in Chinese opera costume waving her arm against the fire, and since that time the protector goddess has prevented another fire to happen! In her honor every year a Chinese opera is performed at the forefront of the market. The market has a non-food section and a food-section. At the back, near the river, lies one of the jetties where one can hire a boat for a tour around the island. The market is open 24/7, also for a meal at a food stall. But for dinner it is more attractive to go to the adjacent Night Food Market.

Bang Pa In

Bang Pa In is located 18 kms. south of Ayutthaya and was the summer palace of the kings of Thailand. The Palace dates back to the 17th century, but most of the buildings are from the 19th century and is very European in design. There is a lovely Thai Pavillion in the middle of a pond, stunning! Its called "The divine seat of personal freedom" The Pond divides the "public" outer area from the "inner" private areas. Its really a lovely garden to stroll around and to enjoy the many photo opportunities. The most interesting building is the Chinese style residence build in China and gifted to King Rama V by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. This is the only building that you can enter but you have to take off your shoes and wear respectfully clothing, no short skirts and pants and no slippers too. It is open from 8.30 -4 pm daily and the entrance fee is 100 Baht (around USD3.50) and since the compound of the palance is so big, you can rent a buggy for 450 Baht for an hour.

Wat Phanan Choeng

The Royal Chronicle (Luang Prasert verion) records that this temple, (across the river from the south-east of the island), was built in 1324, which is 26 years before the establishment of Ayutthaya – making it the oldest temple in Ayutthaya with clear documentation. This temple was developed by Chinese merchants who traded with the Sukhothai kingdom, and it is still revered by the Thai-Chinese community today.Wat Phanan Choeng is the topic of many folk stories. One legend is that the temple was founded by a pre-Ayutthaya prince, Sai Nampung, after his bride committed suicide by jumping in the Pasak River. The boat crew, who could not save her because they were not allowed to touch royalty, drilled a hole in their boat and drowned along with her. Another popular legend is that tears came from the main Buddha images eyes when the Burmese invaded in 1767. Wat Phanan Choeng has been destroyed and renovated many times. King Monkut (Rama IV) ordered major renovations of the main Buddha image, as did also King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). It is highly noted for a large, meditating, Buddha image that is entirely covered with gold leaf (19 meters high by 22 meters wide).

Phon Phet Fortress

The original city walls of King U-Thong (r. 1351-1369) were made from mud mounds and wooden stakes. When new canals were dug the mud and debris were stacked on the bank; this mound served a defensive purpose and cut down on flooding. The first brick and laterite walls were designed by King Maha Chakkraphat (r. 1548-1569) to prevent Burmese attacks, and in 1550 he expanded the walls perimeter to the bank of the river. Even under the watchful eyes of the Burmese, King Maha Thammaracha (r. 1569-1590) was allowed to build new walls around the city under the pretence that Ayutthaya could be invaded by Angkor and powerful eastern cities. Portuguese and French engineers contributed to the thicker and better reinforced style of walls. The new walls were built around the city in 1580, and Phon Phet was constructed around this time. Its location is at a major trading centre by the confluence of the Chao Phraya and Pasak Rivers. For the record, in 1767, the Burmese were unable to penetrate Ayutthaya from this fortress. The city walls were finally breached on the northeast side of the main island – at the Mahachai fortress. In their prime the city walls were 12 kilometers long, 5 meters wide, and six meters high. This included 16 forts and 99 gates.

Wat Ket

Wat Ket is located between Wat Phra Ram and the location used for the elephant shows (Wang Chai). During the Ayutthaya period, Wat Ket was situated near the original jail. Convicts visited this temple for a final chance to pray before execution. Brahmin priests often played a role in judicial affairs. Punishment was done in various ways depending on the crime and the status of the person involved. Some criminals were trampled to death or thrown around by elephants. Others had swords dropped on their heads from specified heights according to severity of their crime. Be-headings were also common.

Elephant ride

Elephant rides are available for trips around the most important sites on the island and they leave from the elephant stable enclosure behind Wat Ket (on the other side of the roundabout from Wat Phra Ram. They cost 500B for half-an-hour or 400B for 20 minutes. If you choose not to have a ride then buy some sweetcorn, fed them and take advantage of a cheap photo opportunity.

Wat Mahathat - Buddhas head

This is the famous site with the Buddha’s head inside of a tree. It almost looks like the tree is giving birth to him. Locals like to say that the tree lifted it off the ground since it was so holy. The intertwining of a sacred image with nature is extremely auspicious in Thai Buddhism and the site often receives merit-makers.

Wat Mae Nang Pleum

On of many peoples favorite temples in Thailand. It's located over the river on the road that goes to the Elephant Kraal. It's actually a monastery that dates back to at least 1377 and its name is mentioned in the Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya relating to a herd of elephants which showed up close to the monastery and were rounded up near Wat Song around the end of 1548. The monastery bears the name of a certain Lady Plum, an old woman being visited by King Naresuan (r. 1590-1605) during one night, following a local legend. Many Thai tourists flock to see the Buddha image in this temple’s wiharn for good luck. If a wish comes true they will return with offerings of boiled eggs and flowers. In the ubosot next door there is also a Buddha image. Legend has it that a disgruntled Thai man once attempted suicide by hanging himself from the ear of this image, causing it to be break off.
