Very Rare and highly desirable, original, 1863, Large Folio Currier & Ives-type, Hand Colored, two stone American Civil War Lithograph depicting the Union Army of the Potomac during the Seven Days Battle by John Badger Bachelder (lithographer by J. H. Bufford).

This important 1863 Stone Lithograph Print is fully titled "The Army of the Potomac. The Wagon Trains of the Army of the Potomac en Route from Chickahominy to James River VA. During the Seven Days Fight. (Fording Bear Creek One Mile below Savage Station.) June 29th 1862.". Boston, 1863. Drawn "from Nature" and published by John Badger Bachelder and lithographer by J.H. Bufford. The Lithograph offered here is a "Proof" (as marked) and has much more extensive and finely executed hand coloring than we have seen on any other example offered over the past 10 to 20 years.

This outstanding, original 1863 Hand Colored Stone Lithograph measures approx. 27" by 17" (image size) and retains what appear to be its full, original margins (overall sheet size is 32" by 22 1/2"). This study captures wagon trains of the Army of the Potomac fording Bear Creek, en route from Chickahominy to James River, Virginia during the Seven Days fight. Bachelder’s studies of Civil War battle scenes are considered to be among the most accurate depictions of events and, as stated above, this view was "Drawn from nature" by Bachelder while traveling with the Army of the potomac.

Though an accomplished artist, photographer, and lithographer, John Badger Bachelder is probably best known for his work in preserving and documenting the Gettysburg battlefield. To this end he served from 1883 to 1887 as the Superintendent of Tablets and Legends for the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association, and is probably responsible more than any man for the placement of monuments and battlefield markers, both Union and Confederate.

This rare and wonderful, Large Folio, Currier & Ives-type hand colored Civil War Stone Lithograph is in very good condition - the colors are dark and bold and the image area is generally clean with some small and scattered spots of light foxing. The only physical damage to the sheet is a 1 1/2" tear near the bottom of the right hand edge (affecting the margin area only) which has an old tape repair on the reverse which has just started to discolor the sheet on the front. The Print was never been cleaned, restored or repaired. There is some light age toning and light soiling mostly confined to the margin areas only. Overall this rare and beautiful, 1863 Large Folio Civil War Lithograph is well preserved and will display beautifully with a quality matting and framing.

This very rare and beautiful, 1863 Currier & Ives-type Large Folio, Hand colored Civil War Lithograph is unconditionally guaranteed to be an original, 1863 printing by J. H. Bufford and not a re-strike, reprint or reproduction.
