A delightful rustic scene delicately painted in grisaille.

This early watercolour, from a group of works dated 1806, is classically 18th-century in subject and style.

On wove paper watermarked at the left edge: "W. Dacie & Co, 1804".

Generally in remarkably good condition for its age, there is a spot of foxing outside the image at the upper left of the sheet, and some paint marks to the verso of the paper.

This work forms part of a collection of pictures by Eliza P. Mosley, dating from 1806 (see photo of name and date inscription). All the works in the collection have the appearance of being after English artist George Morland (1763-1804), arguably the most popular painter in late eighteenth-century Britain, produced just two years after the artist's death.

Morland was known for his genre paintings of humble country life, including cottages and stables, naturally posed peasant folk, horses, donkeys, pigs and sheep. He was very highly regarded and hugely prolific, producing around 250 engravings, and, in the last eight years of this life, some 900 paintings and over a thousand drawings.

Moorland also produced drawing books, such as “Sketches by George Morland” published in 1793-4, in which his graphite drawings were reproduced as soft-ground etchings. It is likely that a number of the drawings in this collection, from the hand of Eliza P. Mosley, are after such examples. One of the drawings is inscribed “Morland”.

Supplying a COA when selling an artwork is a long-established convention. It is all the more pertinent in today’s online marketplace, where as a buyer you commit to purchase without the opportunity to view and scrutinise the work. This is why we supply a COA with every purchase.

We believe it is important to put our name to the authenticity of the artworks we sell. By providing a COA, backed by our knowledge and expertise, we are vouching in good faith that a work is of the stated age and authorship.

All our artworks are of some age, and many are antique. Depending on paper type, some degree of ageing is to be expected and is part of the authenticity of the work. We take care to describe the condition of artworks as fully as possible in our descriptions and photographs. We list any significant condition issues, such as losses, tears, foxing, stains and age toning. For more subtle marks, irregularities or variations in tone, please consult the photographs provided as additional indication of condition.
