High output deluxe GENUINE G.E.

12" HANDHELD U.V. BLACKLIGHT

Intense beam, excellent coverage
Industry standard :
Longwave, 8 watts, 365 nm
Takes 8 AA batteries
THE extra-long model to use for SCORPION HUNTING
(for mind-blowing scorpion stories, see buyer comments way below)

This is the very latest Version III, which uses GENUINE G.E. (General Electric) components. By incorporating an unusual arced body design, the mirror-like metal reflector plate throws off about 30% more longwave UV light than before... a very pleasant surprise when I first saw this.

These cost more than cheaper versions I've seen, but I decided to go with them entirely as the quality is first-rate and very much worth the extra money. You'll see it immeditely in nice touches like an easy to find center-mount on/off switch and clearly marked battery insertion diagram.

But the real reason to go with this thing is the extra U.V. light output... it's clearly the best I've seen to date ( ultimately, I only sell stuff I, too, would buy, and I'm fairly picky...ask anyone who knows me, as they roll their eyes heavenward, in the general direction of the constellation of Orion ).

Some of the text below is partly duplicated from our 6" listing, since everything
applies; only difference being the larger size and UV output of this 12 inch unit

30% MORE UV OUTPUT THAN OTHER HANDHELDS DUE TO UNUSUAL CASE DESIGN

Powerful for it's size (with the understanding it's not a full size AC plug-in unit !). This is an eminently portable, slimline high output AA battery powered genuine UV LONGWAVE blacklight for regular or professional use.

You can save many times the cost of this device if you're lucky enough to spot just one counterfeit bill or questionable antique piece.

Long-term, think of a portable blacklight as a TOOL that everyone should have (it may not be needed this minute, or this month even, but when it is needed, it can be incredibly useful).

Blacklights can be great fun, and immensely practical at the same time. Below is a comprehensve list of wondrous real-world applications for both AC plug-in models and portable handhelds.

TYPICAL MYRIAD USES :

SCORPION HUNTING IN THE DESERT:
Believe it or not, these critters turn bright fluorescent green under UV....Arizonians will cheefully attest to this; one playfully nicknamed her unit 'Scorpion Seeker'.

DETECTING SUN DAMAGE ON YOUR SKIN:
Prepare to be shocked here-----look at your face in a mirror under UV and brown patches will show where sun damage has occurred over the years.

FISHING LURES (GLOW IN THE DARK TYPE):
Quickly recharge this or any other glow in the dark item.

HAND STAMPS:
Used in night clubs with invisible ink for readmission identification.

DETECTING FAKED SIGNATURES or STAMP COLLECTIONS:
Especially, if a signature was 'added' to a painting or document years after its production.

MINERAL AND ROCK INSPECTION:
Many of these naturally fluoresce under longwave UV for easy identification in the field (some, however, work better under shortwave UV....shortwave lamps, however, require eye protection).

GLASS AND IVORY ANALYSIS:
Certain glass types, such as Vaseline or Burmese, glow brightly under UV. Don't quote me on this, but I think Custard glass is identifiable as well.

USE WITH INVISIBLE INK PEN TO SECRETLY MARK ITEMS:
This is very clever, actually. You can mark car parts when getting your car worked on (if your UV mark is still there, the part was never changed). Same goes for returned items if you're a seller. And, of course, to mark household items, bikes, etc. for theft ID.
See this item below (it lurks in my ebaY Store).

INDUSTRIAL / MILITARY / POLICE/ FORENSIC / LABORATORY USES
These applications have been used for decades, of course,

QUICKLY IDENTIFY REPAIRED ANTIQUE ITEMS:
Old versus new materials become really obvious under UV--it's almost like having a form of X-ray vision. Glued areas on porcelain or pottery items are a dead giveaway with this handheld unit, as are overpainted pieces. And cracks or flaws in china that are not visible to the naked eye, even a trained one, are screaming out loud under blacklight (older and newer materials and overpainted areas glow differently). Gems, stamps, cast iron and various paper materials are good candidates as well.

TEXTILE ANALYSIS
Highlight weave defects and uniformity; new fabric threads tend to illuminate brighter than older ones.

PET URINE STAINS:
Detect urine on household surfaces; if you have a kitty or puppy marking areas in your house that need to be deodorized, a strong blacklight can identify the offending spots. Often these are invisible to the eye, but will creat an odor over time. Using your blacklight, these stains can be treated with an enzyme cleaner.

HOTEL NIGHTMARES
A side note: I remember (and you may have seen) a mind-boggling TV expose once about commercial hotels and motels, and the stories the sheets therein REALLY told after a quick blacklight inspection by a private detective ('fluids' left behind and never cleaned up, as an example).

MAY HELP CONTROL COLD AND FLU VIRUSES:
Indoors, in conjunction with full spectrum lighting (full size unit is necessary for this).

DISCOVER BACTERIA AND MOLD:
Some (though not all) are exposed by UV

DETECTING COUNTERFEIT MONEY:
The differences are painfully obvious---fake money glows unnaturally bright; the latest currency has a UV glow strip.

DETECTING ALTERED CREDIT CARDS:

Just for fun, look at your American Express credit card under blacklight.

THIS IS THE UPDATED VERSION III MODEL

Modified units (wannabe copies) exist on the internet, and tend to be somewhat deficient in either design or brightness; these are the real deal as far as quality goes.

HALLOWEEN AND PARTY DECORATIONS, THEATRICAL AND FASHION SHOWS, and EVEN LOVEMAKING:
Not much elaboration needed here !

MANUSCRIPT FORGERIES:
The 'Hitler Diaries', as an example, were suspicious because of the paper used.

ART EFFECTS: ILLUMINATE FLUORESCENT PAINT:
Fluorescent paint glows extremely bright, as do white indoor surfaces or clothing such as a white shirt (as all party goers know).

SUPER GOLF BALL DETECTOR:
This is quite a hoot; since golf balls highlight quite well under UV, finding them is a cinch.

LICENSE UNDER BLACKLIGHT
BUILT-IN:
On/off Switch; the first model I've ever seen with an oversize side/center mount, which makes it totally easy to find when you're in a hurry.

INCLUDED:
VELCRO TABS and SCREWS FOR UNDERSHELF MOUNTING:
Such as in glass showcases at trade shows, where you're wanting to illuminate mineral specimens

BULB GUARD:
Good breakage protection

SCORPION WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION:
Almost all scorpions on earth glow under U.V., some more brightly than others, which in large part is determined by exoskeleton density. And why do they glow at all ? An evolutionary trick of nature apparently; a favorite scorpion 'ordeurve' is many kinds of insects. Quite a few plants emit U.V. also, which insects are readily equipped to see. Hence, the scorpion is essentially pretending to be a flower by 'lighting up' and attracting unsuspecting insects who think they're headed for a nectar source. Glad I'm not an insect.

One of the very best scorpion adventure stories comes from Mary B. (thanx Mary!) :

Hi Alan....

My son and I took the 12" one out tonight and must have found a dozen or more scorps ACK!! in only a couple minutes.

We'd like to get 2 more at least LOL.. maybe he could find some buddies to go on the hunt with him. I'm on my way out to the nearest store to pick up some carb cleaner. It's the quickest killer for them besides a good stomp (and these are on brick wall or between cracks).

We can only get so many in one night and can share the lights with others on same nights.

We got about 10 in front of the house (one was a mommy or mommy to be with 6-9 babies or eggs on her back).

My son and his friend later got "dozens" out back they said. When spraying a crack, 5 may fall out instead of 1. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it. The creepy crawlers were in the pine needles/cones too. (We live on an acre, so there's lots of land to scour.) I'll not be working out there without gloves anymore for sure! Looks like it's time to take out those huge pine trees (12-13) that drop all the mess the scorpions enjoy living & breeding in.

Thanks SO much!

QUESTIONS FROM PAST BUYERS
And, just maybe, a few answers

Question :

Hello, does this use the F8T5 / BLB fluorescent blacklight bulb?

- Steven.

Reply :

Yep, that be the one.

Question :

What is the wavelength on this model ? I'm looking for one that can detect mold, I was told I needed about 380 to 385 nm.

- Mario

Reply :

Both the 6 inch and 12 inch models are 365nm, which is in actuality better. Basically, the lower the nm value, the more revealing the UV spectrum is. At 365nm, for instance you'll see embedded holograms on licenses and can light up invisible UV paint....385nm is just out of bounds for those.

Question :

What do people tend to buy, the 6 inch or 12 inch model ? The cost isn't that much different.

- Julie

Reply :

Main difference between the 6 inch and 8 inch I think is that where portability and small size is a factor, buyers will tend to go for the 6 inch version, as it'll fit in a purse or bag quite handily. It'll also be less weight since it takes only 4 AA batteries vs 8 AA on the larger blacklight.

On the other hand, the 12 incher has more actual UV output at 8 watts (vs 4 watts on the 6 inch), so usually from that perspective the 12 incher is a better buy if size doesn't matter.

Question :

Hi i am just wondering, how long roughly does this blacklight last? cause i don't want to have to keep replacing batteries, you know? :) and how bout the bigger ones you sell? Your help is most appreciated.

- Cheers, Avery

Reply :

If you're using it on-again off-again and use either alkaline or rechargeable batteries, it should go many months.

If you mean nonstop continuous, then probably about 6-9 hours on the 6 incher, depending on temperature (if very cold, then less)

The bigger 12 inch one lasts about the same, since it's using 8 batteries instead of 4, but it's also 8 watts instead of 4 watts.

Too, you can always use common 'AA' size rechargeables. And a hot tip on all rechargeable batteries....put them in the freezer just when not being used, they'll last much, much longer.

Question :

What's the effective range of the light ? Interested to try and use this for
arrowhead hunting at night but if it doesnt get at least a 6 foot glow then
might not be worth it... please let me know.

- Thank you, Charles

Reply :

Hey there Charles !

Pretty far, actually. Just to refresh my memory, I tried it in a large closet on T-shirts and fluorescent stickers.....approx 10-12 feet was where UV fluorescence tapered off, depending on the item.

Still, I'm wondering out loud what kind of arrowheads these are ? I have some here I found as a kid way back when in Ohio, and they don't react to UV light at all, no matter how dark it is, so this is a new concept I'd not heard of.

And if they do indeed glow under UV, there's no guarantee this would work well at 6 ft distance, since it would really depend on how much phosphorescent material these arrowheads contain (it's possible they'd not glow well under any blacklight, even a plugin AC one at that distance, dunno).

ROCK COLLECTION
Under a Monster UV 100 watt indoor AC bulb.

Brightness under a battery blacklight would depend on proximity (the AC bulb used in the picture (available in our store), is extremely high output by comparison).

Unit is brand new, in the box.

Takes 8 standard, easily obtainable 'AA' size batteries, not included (are they ever). By the way, alkalines or rechargeables are highly recommended over standard heavy duty batteries.

Bulb size is a standard fluorescent 12 inch F8T5 / BLB (BLB stands for blacklight blue).

Thanx a million for looking in!
