~ Circa 1850s Portable Campaign Writing Slope Of Lt Colonel Charles Woodford ~

A nice quality campaign writing slope once the property of Lt Colonel Charles Woodford.

The piece is of oak with brass handles to either side.

The piece is inscribed to the front ‘Lt Colonel Charles Woodford, DAQMG, Rifle Brigade’.

The ‘DAQMG’ standing for ‘Deputy Adjutant and Quartermaster General’.

Once the lid is opened the front panel lowers to reveal a hinged leather writing slope with a lift up panel revealing a compartment underneath. Above this is a four section papers/letters holder.

The inside of the lid has a leather lining with loops to hold pencils and such.

~ Dimensions ~

The piece measures 34cm (13 ½ inches) wide, 25.5cm (10 inches) in height with a depth of 16.5cm (6 ½ inches).

The slope when fully laid out has a length of 58.5cm (23 inches).

It weighs 4.25Kg.

~ Condition ~

There are two screw holes either side of the box just by the handles indicating that the handles are possibly not original as there may have once been a different set mounted here.

The box is missing the upper half of the lock piece, two small brass fixing and two covering parts of a hinge.

There is a gap and some discolouration to the wood behind the slop where there once may have been a small drawer or such like which is now lost.

There is some wear and deterioration to the leather in parts but most of it is still in good order.

A small section (approx. 2cm) of the edge of the slope is missing which has caused one panel of the slope to be unsecure; this has in turn caused a small tear in the leather.

The box has some wear from use but overall is in a nice condition for its age with no major damage.
