~ First Trade Edition Of The Tailor Of Gloucester By Beatrix Potter 1903 ~

A first trade edition of the Beatrix Potter book ‘The Tailor of Gloucester’ published in 1903.

The book was originally privately printed by the author in 1902 and subsequently published in a trade edition by Frederick Warne & Co. in October 1903.

The book is bound in a blue hardback cover with a colour pictorial label to the front.

It contains twenty-six colour plates. Seventeen illustrations are entirely new for this edition; eleven of the illustrations are repeated from the December 1902 privately printed edition. 

There is an inscription in ink on the first page which reads ‘Janet P. Coates, From Dodo, Christmas 1918’.

~ Dimensions ~

The book measures 11cm (4 ⅓ inches) by 14.5cm (5 ¾ inches).

It weighs 140g.

~ Condition ~

There is a paper sticker from a book shop inside the cover, a circular mark from a sticker on the back cover and there is a word written in pencil on the top corner of the second page. 

There is the odd little smudge from age to the inside cover and the tops of the pages are a little discoloured from dust etc.

Overall the book is in a very nice condition with no damage, clean pages and only some light fading to the cover.

The Tailor of Gloucester is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. The story is about a tailor whose work on a waistcoat is finished by the grateful mice he rescues from his cat and was based on a real world incident involving a tailor and his assistants. For years, Potter declared that of all her books it was her personal favourite.
