In ancient times since
banks did not exist, Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going
into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid
tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an
individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings
represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing.
Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred
for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was
more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of
dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of
betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was
customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the
finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home.
The
name Taranis derives from the Indo-European root 'taran' meaning
thunderer or thunder. He has been depicted as a wise, patriarchal being
holding a lightening bolt and a solar wheel.
Many
representations of a bearded god with a thunderbolt in one hand and a
wheel in the other have been recovered from Gaul, where this deity
apparently came to be syncretised with Jupiter.
The name as recorded by Lucan is unattested epigraphically, but variants of the name occur in inscriptions, including the forms Tanarus, Taranucno-, Taranuo-, and Taraino-. The name is continued in Irish asTuireann. His name is likely connected with that of the Germanic god of thunder, Norse Thor (Anglo-SaxonÞunor, German Donar), Tiermes of the Nordic Sami people,
Taranis is likely associated with the Gallic Ambisagrus (likely from Proto-Celtic *ambi-sagros = "about-strength"), and in the interpretatio romana with Mars.
