Stunning Original Saxon Church Font from St Peters & St Pauls church in Nottinghamshire The font was in service until 1867 when the introduction of the new much larger and more ornate font arrived a donation from a wealthy land owner which is still in service today. The original Saxon font was removed and put into the church yard where it stood for over 90 years. It was rescued by the care taker after the church yard was cleaned up for renovation and rejuvenation. The vicar was very happy to let him have it for many years of voluntary service to the church. It was moved into his garden which backs onto the church yard where it was used as garden planter. The care taker past away a few years ago, and his widow cleaned out the house and offered it to one of the neighbors who had shown an interest in the font, unfortunately they divorced last year and it then came into our position. To be honest with you there is no way I would ever have dreamt in selling the font as we love it so much, but we need the money for a organisation that we run that helps people with their fight against depression. The front or top has no cracks and is as strong as the day it was made? Probably as I was not around in Saxon times

The font is believed to date back to the early 1100s which is the earliest records that the church has, St peters & St Pauls church is listed in the doomsday book and there has only ever been one record of one new font in 1867 AD. There is no reason to believe otherwise as the size, shape & height are typical of other Saxon fonts, just looking at the pictures you can see this is hundreds of years old. I promise you this is a once in a life time chance to own a real piece of history, and this opportunity will not come again, for you or ourselves.

The font is a two piece set up. The base is hollowed and has a small tunnel shaped hole at the foot of the base to allow the water to escape, and the basin is approximately 12" across and 10" in depth with a small hole for the water to drain, it probably would have had a wooden bung to stop the water from escaping originally. The total weight is about 3/4 of a ton. The base can be lifted by two, but it will take at least five strong people to lift the top. The font stands approximately 28" x 28" x 28" which may not sound much but is a very nice size and an impressive sight.

There is a bit of erosion to the base. One of the corners has eroded down and now needs a little help to get the font or top level. We have used a small wedge of wood which isn`t noticeable as it is hidden by the overhang of the top part of the font. As you can imagine it is very hard to put a price on this as you don’t ever see them for sale, fonts from the 17th - early 19th century fetch around £10,000.00 but tend to be much larger and much more ornate. This Saxon font is much smaller and less ornate by comparison, but does have a lot history and could be as old as if not older than the church it came from, as no church records were keept of baptisms before the early 1100s. We have put a modest £5000. Buy-it-now or we will see what kind of offers we receive, and decide if the price seems fair.

If you decide to make an offer or buy it now you really won’t be disappointed the font is absolutely stunning. Everyone that comes to the house admires it, it is a real head turner and can be used for what it was intended for or a water feature / birdbath or a planter, which it has been for the last x amount of years. I’m sure that if it was sent over to America they would pay thousands, but it would be a shame to let such a rare thing go. If you would like to view the font, you can email and we will arrange a time and day that is convenient for us both. 100% of the money that we raise from the sale will go to Teardrops, a local organisation that helps people suffering from depression

A small deposit will be required as soon as the auction has ended and the balance to be paid in full on collection.

Thanks for looking.
