Original Acrylic Painting

"ACEO" stands for "art cards, editions and originals". These little gems measure 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches - the same size as a playing card. They are simply a fun and affordable way of collecting art - you can put them in albums, or frame them in groups. I enjoy painting them because I like small, cute and detailed things - the tiny scale of these paintings is a challenge and a joy to paint!

This painting and all other artwork and text that appears in my auctions are ©Brenda *Saydak and may not be reproduced for any purpose without written consent of the artist. *formerly Mousseau. I am in the process of changing my name.

Please note this auction is for one card only! Please scroll down to see another of my paintings up for sale right now.

Materials

I use Golden brand fluid acrylics. They're an incredibly rich professional artist's paint with gorgeous colors and a high pigment load. Depending on the painting I also use Golden metallic pigments which give a rich sheen and interest to the painting. To finish and refine the paintings I use archival ink. I'm a bit of a perfectionist - my materials allow me total control over the painting process. The surface I paint on is Arches 140 lb watercolor paper. This is an archival, high quality paper that doesn't warp but is thin enough to fit nicely into a card album.

Kitty Tea Shop Waitress

copyright B. Saydak 2012

Ukiyoe artists like to portray real women - anyone viewing the prints would have recognized the subject right away. Although probably most well-know for depicting courtesans and geisha, ordinary women were also featured - although usually ones with some renown as bijin - or beautiful women. Tea shop waitresses were a favorite subject, with the result of these women gaining a bit of fame! I went all out on Miss Kitty's kimono, which sports stripes, flowers, a padded hem and a shibori lining. She wears a tie-dyed apron, a signifier of her profession. The black velvet obi with a cherry-red lining set off the kimono perfectly, as does the black collar - very fashionable at the time.

There is a LOT of detail in this painting. Images shown are bigger than life. The little speckles you see in the obi are simply light reflections off the textured surface from my scanner (you can see the texture of the paper well in the background).

About my paintings

All my ACEOs are original works of art, not prints or embellished prints. Each card is carefully imagined and sketched out, transferred to watercolor paper, inked and painted. Here you can get an idea of my process:

About Me

I'm a mother of two boys who works as an artist and designer in Manitoba Canada, which is smack-dab right in the middle of the Canadian prairies. I love painting animals, especially cats, and I have an obsessive interest in Asian cultures, especially Japanese history and art. I have two furry kids also, a part siamese rescue cat with beautiful blue eyes that jiggle, and a new addition to the family - a white bicolored eyed deaf cat! I am proud to say my work can be found in collections all over North America and Europe, as well as Japan!
