Early 1900's Mint German Mettlach Beer Stein
Wiener Stadtbrau Wiener Rathauskeller Brewery #1526
Offered for your collecting pleasure, a 1/2 liter number 1526 Mettlach advertising brewery stein, made in the Saar Basin of Germany around the turn of the century. This stein was made for the Wiener Rathauskeller located inside the basement of Vienna, Austria's City Hall building. The front of the stein depicts a medieval knight which is a depiction of the same statue which sits in front of Vienna's Rathausmann. The original statue of the medieval knight was modeled on the armor of Emperor Maximilian I. The stein is in mint condition. This stein along with others we will be listing in the coming weeks is part of a collection of Mettlachs.

Since its completion in 1883, Vienna's Rathaus, or City Hall, has been the headquarters of the city and provincial government. Architect Friedrich Schmidt designed the basement vault as a place for "food and drink".In 1899, Rathauskeller was inaugurated by then Mayor of Vienna Dr. Karl Lueger with a toast to "His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty, Emperor Franz Josef I", and to this day it is known as the home of "good taste".
