A little Royal history: By the 1930s, Royal had long since grown to be one of the leading typewriter companies in the world, firmly established along with Underwood and Remington as one of the Big Three. This Desk Model is an appealing updated version of the famous Royal No. 10, known as one of the best manual machines ever made. This new model is distinguished by its metal side panels instead of beveled glass. Like many Royals, this one features the very durable black paint that makes it appear new even after decades of use. This Classic is ready for your desk top, or put on display, and or both. This is the of 1937 ROYAL KHM Model and was given the Serial Number KHM 2082401 DISPOSITION: We do want to mention after the meticulous testing and examining of this machine there are a few details that you should be aware of. The Glass Chromed capped keys have acquired some stains and light wear after the last 76 years. Although the characters are all readable there are a few that are harder to see than others. The machine also has handling marks around the edges where some paint has been chipped off. Although "working as designed", there has been repairs to the paper bail assembly in years past. Please examine the photos carefully for grade quality and the overall disposition of this vintage 1937 collectible.
This KHM is essentially an update to the Model 10, with the metal inserts replacing glass windows. Note the curved scale incorporated into the right-side panel. It's the indicator for a touch-control adjustment wheel located at the lower center of the back of the machine. There does appear to be a light stain of red paint just above the scale.
The decals are still very present, but they do have some wear. The carriage return seems to glide along without a hitch, and you will hear a distinctive "ding" at the end of each line; also the right margin stop on this model does not operate as some others machines. When you are typing you will hear the bell at the end of each line, and as you go further the carriage will not stop as other machines, but the keys will stop functioning. If you need to continue typing you hit the Margin Release key, the keys will start functioning again. This is a classic that you will be proud to display and use for many years to come. We have replaced the old ribbon with a new Black and Red ribbon for your convenience making it ready to type on as soon as you get it unpacked. This nice collectible is classified as an "Pica", typing at 10 characters per inch.
The letter "E" doesn't show up very well in the photos but it is readable. Also the 1/4 & 1/2 key has been replaced and is not original. Our biggest concern with these machines, are the mechanics.
We want to make sure everything is functioning "as designed" to the best of our ability for your typing pleasure. Our machines have been cleaned, lubricated, inspected and tested, and then inspected again before shipping.
Functionally, the letter keys are very responsive and work flawlessly especially after the cleaning and lubrication process.
The finish still shines up nicely. The opening under the stencil is where the touch-control adjustment wheel is located. A shroud was applied around the mechanism that actually sets the tab stops in the tab stop rack on the carriage. Simply just a wonderful addition to your vintage office or collection. Overall, it is just a very classy machine in great mechanical condition. A nice collectible machine that is also fun to type on! << We specialize in packing your valuables with "extra care", to survive the shipping process >> Note on Shipping Cost: This heavy and fragile machine will require extra protection for shipment.
