 Tonearm Cable - Canare StarQuad 24AWG - 1.2 metres
5-pin tonearm connector - RCA
Available in Orange or Black

This Canare is a premium shielded starquad cable. The cable consists of four 24 AWG annealed copper conductors with Cross Linked PE Insulation and a braided copper shield. This is the standard version of the Canare starquad with 6mm overall diameter. Using fine stranded high conductivity copper cores and specially formulated PVC compounds that combine to make a soft yet strong and durable outer jacket the cable achieves a great degree of flexibility. Handling noise is minimized by the use of cotton fillers. The irradiated polyethylene core insulation provides a low capacitance dielectric. This cable effectively rejects EMI and RFI thanks to its dense braided shield. Canare does not use spiral (serve) shields to prevent spreading apart with use. The braided shield of this cable is more difficult to manufacture because it uses many thin copper strands in a densely woven braid but it results to a very flexible construction with outstanding noise rejection

Our star-quad tonearm cables are professionally finished, running through a continuous length of conductors. We construct the cable in such a way that we maintain full, continuous shielding throughout its length (from the tonearm connector to the RCAs), while keeping the ground and interference paths entirely isolated from the signal conductors enhancing the detail and maintaining a quite background.

The tonearm connector is a straight, high-end 5-pin connector by the Canadian 1877Phono which features non-magnetic body and Teflon insulation (see photo). Its precision machined contacts are made of 24K gold plated OFC copper to ensure a perfect connection between tonearm and arm cable. This straight version uses a compression collet to ensure a firm grip on the cable without the need to use unnecessary heatshrink to cover the connector and reduce the cable flexibility. The tonearm connector is available in gold or silver finish (please specify your preference at the check-out). These connectors will fit all tonearms that require a 5-pin female mini-DIN cable like Linn, Roksan, Jelco, Audio Technica, Graham, Audioquest, Acoustic research, Dynavector, Denon, Micro Seiki, Acos Lustre some SME and many others.

The RCAs are the gold plated Neutrik Rean NYS373 with rubber boots for cable strain relief.
Other RCA options (Starline RCAs, KLE Innovations Harmony Plugs, and WBT NextGen etc) are also available upon request at an extra cost.

The cable is not only sonically excellent. It will also impress with its professional construction.

The quality of our work on this type of cables is second to none. Not only we have the expertise but we also dedicate a considerable amount of time to ensure that the cable assembly is prepared and finished in the highest standards. We keep stock of various types and grades of shields, inner insulating materials as well as outer PVC and silicone compound jackets to construct and finish our cables in the most appropriate way. All the relevant electrical and mechanical parameters are taken into consideration and the success of the end product is evaluated by actual measurements prior to any personal, subjective interpretation of its performance.

StarQuad cables: It is important to explain that we do not use our quad cables in the traditional pairing mode which is often the case with mic cable assemblies and aims at the further reduction of noise in larger lengths. Such use of a starquad cable inevitably results to quite high levels of capacitance. With appropriate wiring configuration Quad cables offer a unique advantage of isolating all paths. “Send”(signal), “return” (signal ground), shield & chassis ground remain independent from each other for the entire length of the cable and keep the overall cable capacitance at minimum levels while while preserving a dual mono structure within a common enclosure (screen).

The above configuration of quad cables requires extensive customization of the cable in order to maintain a continuous shielding from one end to the other and preserve the original cable characteristics. Hence these cable assemblies are not simply a matter of fitting plugs on a bulk, off the reel cable; they are products of extensive work and their construction requires the use of various materials and expertise in order to lead to a successful result both in terms of its performance and build quality. The Mogami and Canare starquad cables we use, under the given configuration have a capacitance between 62pF/m and 67pF/m at 1kHz (depending on the exact cable design). These are actual, measured figures (not estimates based on manufacturer specs.) and they take into account stray capacitance in a typical operating environment. These figures do not take into account any additional capacitance resulting by the use of the connectors.

The tails of these starquad cables have been reworked using the same techniques and materials that we use on our top line handmade cables. The insulating materials and the shields we use on these reconstructed portions exceed by far the standards of the original assembly. At the same time the finish of the cable is outstanding ensuring both durability and flexibility but it also maintains a very appealing overall profile.
The tails of this Canare cable have been finished using the original, orange Canare cable jacket.

We hope that it is clear that the labour, materials and expertise we apply on these cables are by far beyond what one would expect from a cable at this price range.

ABOUT US

We are a small, UK registered, family business. Among other analogue audio related projects (turntables, tonearms pre-amplifiers etc) we produce specialized audio cables. The main part of our work consists of designing and producing entirely handmade cables and some of it is featured in our website: www.back-promo.co.uk .

Good quality audio cables however, do not have to be very expensive neither be made of exotic materials and consist of complex structures. A good performing analogue audio cable is primarily defined by the electrical parameters it produces and how these parameters are matched with the interconnected components. Such cables can and should be available at affordable selling prices. So most of the products we list on our ebay pages aim at customers who want to achieve a very good level of performance in their audio system without spending a fortune on their wiring.

Good quality cables are available to purchase in bulk at very affordable prices and some of them are particularly suitable for certain applications (most audio cables after all, regardless their price, stock or aftermarket, branded or not, are nothing but mass produced, off the reel cables custom finished for a specific purpose. What matters is the quality and suitability of the selected cable and the quality of the customization performed on it).

We are a workshop that produces at very small numbers and we have no intention of mystifying our work, re-branding the cables we use and adopt marketing strategies for the sake of charging high selling prices. Unlike the common approach the price of a cable gives no indication of its performance. The price we charge for each of our cables is a direct reflection of the cost of materials, labour and any other service charges we have to pay for (i.e. ebay, paypal etc). In other words we are unable to offer further discounts on our products.

You will notice that we offer a wide range of phono / tonearm cables. Regardless what you may think about audio cables and their impact on the sonic performance of a system, phono cables (i.e. cables that form the path between the cartridge and the phono pre-amp) can result to a world of difference (for the better or the worse). Hence our dedication in offering a large selection of products that can meet the requirements of most customers.

Several aspects that matter on an audio cable are regularly either overemphasized or entirely ignored by the relevant literature leading to false impressions on what matters and what doesn't while also shaping the expected value for money perception of a customer. We select our materials and use certain procedures based on actual knowledge and not on abstract claims. We are more than happy to give our honest opinion on certain products.

All of our cables are produced and sold directly by ourselves without any intermediary distributors. We maintain two workshops, one in Wales (UK) and one in Halkidiki (Greece). Since our living and work is shared between these two countries, our cables are made and sent by either of our two workshops. As it is expected our cables are made by the same people and we use exactly the same materials, processes and quality control regardless the place of production. Typically we are based in the UK between October and July while the rest of the year we are based in Greece. We always mention in our listings where are our cables sent from so that our customers have a clear idea of the delivery times and postal charges.

For our custom made cable assemblies we have picked up the most suitable cables for the purpose by some of the most well known cable manufacturers.

All the parameters that are crucial for the accurate, low loss transfer of the low level signal have been taken into account. Proper EMI/RFI screening throughout the entire length of the cable, low capacitance, appropriate dielectrics, conductor quality, flexibility and anything that may affect aspects of the cable performance have been addressed and considered carefully before choosing our listed cables.

Some brands we have chosen to use are Mogami, Canare and Van Damme. You will find that we use certain types of cables from each of the brands for a similar purpose. This way we can offer you the option to choose the most appropriate cable from the manufacturer of your preference; and we would be happy to help offering our honest opinion on each of the cables we have available.

All of our cables are fully shielded from the one end to the other. With our star-quad cables we take a considerable amount of time to re-insulate the twisted pairs of conductors and re-shield the cable ends with dense, high coverage copper braids. WE DO NOT leave any part of the conductors exposed to EMI and RFI by simply covering them in heatshrink, nor we use inferior foil tapes to claim 100% shielding. Our work meets the highest standards and our cables are not to be compared with low cost inadequately customized alternatives.

In their majority our cable assemblies have a symmetrical structure and their our shielding is used as a full-floating Faraday Cage connected only to the external ground (i.e. in a similar way to the metal enclosures of your audio components). This means that we take full advantage of the balanced geometry of the cables we use and entirely isolate the EMI/RFI path from both “send” and “return” signal conductors. The benefit of such an approach is better resolution, quieter background and lower levels of capacitance. Please feel free to enquire about the possibility of alternative shield and ground arrangements.

So if you have any specific requirements, please do contact us in advance and we will do our best to help. Note that most customisations will affect the price of the cable depending on the cost of the necessary parts.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions regarding these cables
