This beautifully designed set of mid-century modern chess pieces was purchased by me in 1972 at an estate sale auction.  It has only been used for occasional display, and is in excellent condition.  The colors of the pieces are creamy white and dark chocolate brown.  The material that the pieces are made of is unknown to me.  They are reasonably heavy, and they have a smooth, but not overly slick, feel.  Perhaps they are molded crushed stone, or they may be an unusually substantial synthetic.  The pieces have felted bottoms measuring between 1.1 inches and 1.4 inches square.  The height measurements are: Kings = 4 inches, Queens = 3.6 inches, Bishops = 2.9 inches, Knights = 3.0 inches, Rooks = 2.8 inches, and Pawns = 2.1 inches.  Every piece, on its reverse side, bears the imprint "1969 ROBERT LANDER" who, I presume, is the designer who gave these pieces such a graceful and sweeping art deco look when they were created in 1969.
