Lot Notes
An important original watercolour and ink drawing by one of the foremost Palladian architects in Europe and court architect to Catherine the Great in St Petersburg; Giacomo Quarenghi. The drawing has a wonderful provenance having been sold by the John Manning Gallery c.1940. More recently the drawing was included in Christie's Russian Art sale in London on 3rd June 2013 with an estimate of £15,000.00 - £20,000.00 GBP. The relevant page of the Christie's catalogue is shown in the photograph section and a copy is included in this sale. The drawing is being sold here without reserve. This drawing was not produced en plein air (Quarenghi never visited the Crimea) but rather take drawings by Mikhail Ivanov (1748-1823) as it's basis. Formerly in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, the Ivanov originals are now held in the drawing department of the State Russian Museum, St Petersburg. Quarenghi regularly used other artist's drawings as a source of inspiration, amending them to suit his purpose and reflect his style.
Condition

Artist Information
A prominent exponent of neoclassical architecture, Giacomo Quarenghi was one of the foremost Palladian architects in Europe and contributed greatly to St Petersburg's architectural landscape under Catherine the Great. Quarenghi was born near Bergamo, in Northern Italy, in 1744. In Italy, he studied as a painter under G. Reggi, a pupil of Tiepolo, and several other prominent artists and architects. Later Quarenghi secured commissions in England as a neoclassical landscaper and architect. In 1779, Quarenghi accepted Catherine the Great's post as court architect in St Petersburg. Among his most celebrated architectural monuments we find the English Palace at Peterhof and the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Tselo. In later years, Quarenghi produced numerous landscape drawings both on Imperial commission and for private individuals.

Every item we sell is fully guaranteed to be as described and a signed photo certificate is issued with every painting. We use the same cataloguing terms as most major auction houses, the terms that appear in the listing are also used on the certificates of authenticity. The cataloguing terms that we use have the following meanings;
- where the bold coloured text which forms the listing's heading reads 'by' and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist;
- where the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part;
- where the expression 'circle of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence;
- where the expression 'follower of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil;
- where the expression 'manner of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date;
- where the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or pastiche (of any date) of a work by the artist. Where the term 'signed...' is used in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist, where the term 'with signature...' or 'bears signature...' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist.
