BOOK CONDITION TERMS

Mint
I never sell brand new books, as they are all purchased ?second hand?, but many are in almost untouched condition and will have no inscriptions, so these I rate as ?Mint?.

Near Fine
Book shows little, if any signs, of wear ? probably nothing more than minor rubbing of faces of book or the dust wrapper (where applicable). There may also be a previous owner's name and/or inscription (or ex-libris label) near the front of the book.

Very Good
May show light shelf wear to the cover or wrapper, with some minor edge wear to wrapper but often appears to have had little use. It may have a previous owner's name and/or inscription or ex-libris label to the front of book, but no other markings. Older books, and some newer ones that have been printed on poor quality paper stock, are likely to have some foxing (brown spotting) and yellowing of page borders. Occasionally, there may be minor

Good
Shows it has had moderate use and shelf wear, with the odd spot or minor stain and wrapper may have small tears and chipping. It may have a previous owner's name and/or inscription to the front of book, and possibly some other minor markings or underlining of text (with the odd notation ? usually to text books).

Fair
Shows heavier use, with heavier soiling, tears, and a page may be loose or missing.

Ex-library
I use this category to define books acquired from public libraries that will have the odd label to the spine and a few internal library stamps, with some lacking the front free endpaper (occasionally, there may also be a card holder on the inside front cover).

Books that have come from private collections that have an ex-libris label in front will be categorised in the relevant condition sector i.e. Near Fine, Very Good, Good or Fair.
