THE PAINTINGS OF POUSSIN

Anthony Blunt

The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts / 1958

National Gallery of Art, Washtington, D.C.

265 Plates Illustrated.

Published by Phaidon Press Ltd – 1968, First Edition.

Prefatory Note by A.F. Blunt.

“This volume contains reproductions of the paintings I consider to be authentic works by Poussin. In those few cases where the original is not traceable, copies or engravings have been used instead. The copies have been placed in the main series of plates, but the engravings have been put together at the end, in a separate group Although not all the works reproduced here are discussed in the text volume, it was felt that it would be an advantage to add those few not mentioned and to publish a complete corpus of illustrations. Each painting is listed and discussed in my catalogue of Poussin’s paintings, published separately in the Phaidon edition.

In principle the plates are arranged in chronological order, but since in many cases a precise dating is, in my opinion, impossible, I have sometimes grouped together pictures of similar character which may vary somewhat in date. In particular I have broken chronology to bring together in one block the landscapes of the years 1648-51. In view of this uncertainty of chronology, dates have been given only where they are known with fair certainty.

It is perhaps unnecessary to remark that the gathering of photographs of so many paintings in such different places, varying in condition and accessibility, is no easy task. I have been helped in accomplishing it by the kindness and generosity of many people. I should like to single out for special thanks Mme. Sylvie Beguin of the Musee du Louvre, Paris; Mme. Genevieve Jacquelin of Agraci, Paris; Mlle. Francoise Jourdain of the Cabinet des Estampes, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; and Mr. Ernest Nash of Fototeca di Architettura e Topografia dell’Italia antica, Rome.”

This 312 page, 2 Kg weight, 48 year old ex Reference Library hardback book is in very good condition. There is a label and ticket pocket inside the front cover, a label and stamp on the first blank facing page and five small stamped markings on the fourth page, none of which affect the text. Apart from which all pages are clean and unmarked.

The hardback book is enclosed within a slip in hard card case which has protected the book well but this does show signs of wear which have at some stage been extensively repaired.
