"In the Armenian State Art Gallery are kept 230 embroidery samples and colored pictures of needlework designs created by the Armenian women inhabitants of the city of Ourha .

Before the first World War there was a German factory of carpentry on Ourha. One of the senior employees, Bruno Ekkart, getting acquainted with the original and incomparable pieces of embroidery of the local Armenian women decided to order two Armenian painters of the factory to make coloured copies of these masterpieces with the intention of exhibiting them in Berlin as interesting samples of Oriental needlecraft. At that time, in 1915 started the nation-wide calamity, the genocide of the Armenian people and the heroic 40-day-struggle for self-defense of the Armenian inhabitants of Ourha.

After the massacres Bruno married an Armenian woman of great talent. In the autumn of 1918, the war came to an end and Bruno made up his mind to return to Germany . When he proposed to his wife to accompany him, she not only refused to do so, but did not permit him to take the two above-mentioned albums of embroidery and their coloured designs, as they were property of her own people. Later on, she married a young Armenian…and they presented these albums to the State Art Gallery of Armenia. As it is known, in ancient times, the city of Ourha was called “Yedessia” and was founded by the Armenians…

…In time a workshop was developed to produce and sell the wonderful needlecraft of the Armenian women…the profits used to help poor Armenian families…this centuries old handicraft was revived and flourished once more, gaining great renown. In 1903…Miss Karen Eppen arrived in Ourha…After the Armistice, in 1918, Karen Eppen continued her charitable activities and organized new workshops and centers of embroideries… Each nation's art bears the mark of that particular people's colours, taste and style. This is seen above all in the art of carpentry and handicraft decorative designs which have similar features. This is clearly noticeable in the embroidery (needlecraft) of the Armenian women of Ourha… As can be seen in the present album all the decorative motifs and patterns consist mainly of flowers and leaves, but they are arranged with good taste and style. The colours and tones are mild and discreet, often combined with golden threads, typical to Oriental costumes and dresses…
