USS HOPE AH-7 Navy Hospital Ship first day cover postmarked at New York City, NY

This vessel was launched down as a cargo ship at Wilmington, CA in 1943. She was converted

into a Navy Hospital Ship in a dry dock, and commissioned on 15 August, 1944. She joined the

fleet in the Pacific Theater, late in WWII, but greatly assisted in the treatment of  injured from

Leyte Gulf and Okinawa with a Navy crew and US Army medical staff. She was decommissioned

in 1946, but was placed in reserve in 1950 and scrapped in 1978.

The proud ship earned four Battle Stars in WWII service.

The cover was prepared on a ungummed, archive quality envelope.
