Installation

RISC OS 6 Select 6i1 is supplied with an installation application, which
will automate much of the install process. This can be found in the
'NewUsers' directory.

Users who already have RISC OS 6.06 to RISC OS 6.16 installed should use
the contents of the 'UpgradeRO6' directory to upgrade to Select 6i1.
Users running these versions of RISC OS 6 MUST NOT use the full RISC OS
Six installer supplied in the 'NewUsers' directory.

If you are running the RISC OS Six Preview version then you should
uninstall this using the uninstaller provided in the RISCOS6 directory
on your hard disc before installing Select6i1.

Although the installation application will make a backup of your !Boot
structure it is advisable to ensure that your data, applications and
existing boot structure are also backed-up onto CD, network drive or
similar.

We recommend that you quit any unnecessary running tasks before
installing RISC OS 6.

To launch the installer simply double click on the !RO6Instal icon on
the root of this CD. Please read the instructions provided during the
installation process carefully.

Note that RISC OS 6 needs to be installed to a drive that has long
filename support enabled.

Compatibility

This release of Select is suitable for the following machines:

    A7000
    A7000+
    RiscPC
    StrongArm RiscPC
    Turbo RiscPC
    Kinetic RiscPC
    MicroDigital Alpha

In addition this release is also suitable for use on the following
VirtualAcorn products:

    VirtualRPC-SE
    VirtualRPC-SA
    VirtualRPC-Adjust
    VirtualRPC-AdjustSA

This release of Select is NOT suitable for the following machines.
Attempts to install this version of Select on these machines may cause
them to fail to boot correctly.

    MicroDigital Omega
    MicroDigital Mico
    RiscStation
    Iyonix
    A9 Home

Upgrade from earlier versions of RISC OS

This release is ONLY suitable for the upgrade of an existing stand-alone
ROM based RISC OS 4 or RISC OS Adjust (4.39) install. Please ensure that
you have booted from the hard disk that is to be upgraded and not, for
example, from another machine via a network. Do not attempt to install
RISC OS 6 on a machine running a 'soft loaded' version of RISC OS 4.02.

You should ensure that you have current versions of all applications and
that these applications are suitable for the existing Select platform.
This is especially important for those users who are new to Select.

Please note that replacing a RISC OS !Boot structure with a new one,
such as happens in the installation process, may cause some applications
which store data within the boot structure to fail.

The RISC OS 6 installer will transfer the data from 99% of applications
into the new RISC OS 6 Boot sequence correctly. However it may be
possible that some applications will not be able to find their resources
after RISC OS 6 has been installed. You should be prepared to re-install
these applications if necessary, or copy the appropriate data from your
backups.

Some applications may rely on the time-stamps of specific files within
the boot structure, and may also need to be re-installed.

Hardware profiles

If you are using hardware profiles then you will have to manually copy
some settings from your old Boot sequence. RISC OS 6 will automatically
default to hardware profiles being disabled.

Hardware and expansion podules

Some hardware devices also store configuration data within the boot
structure, and may need to have their settings checked after installing
RISC OS 6.

ViewFinder expansion cards

Before installing Select 6i1 you must revert to using the VIDC output on
your machine. The default setting for RISC OS 6 is to start up using the
VIDC. Once RISC OS 6 has started you will be able to go to Configure >
Display > Output, and enable the ViewFinder output.

If you have a ViewFinder, before installing Select 6i1 you will need to:

1. Make a note of your current monitor configuration, IE Mode Definition
File and screen mode. To find your current settings double click on
!Boot, and click "Display" and then "Monitor".

2. Connect your monitor to the standard video connector and re-start
the machine with the "V" key held down.

3. Configure a Mode Definition File and suitable screen mode for your
minitor using "Display" > "Monitor" (as above).

RISC OS 6 currently supports ViewFinder cards based on the Rage128
chipset. This is the vast majority of cards. If your ViewFinder is based
on a different chipset then you will still be able to use RISC OS 6 but
you will need to use the VIDC monitor output.

Networking

Please ensure you have the current drivers for your network device. RISC
OS 6 Select 6i1 is supplied with drivers for a number of common network
interfaces - these should be used in preference.

Your existing network setting should be preserved by the installer.

APDL ArcIn IDE cards

A small subset of APDL IDE cards are known not to work with RISC OS 6,
specifically the ArcIn cards which are fitted with FLASH memory.
Unfortunately it isn't possible to detect in software which will work
and which will not. The RISC OS 6 installer will report any card that
*might* not work. You should check the card before installing RISC OS 6.
If in doubt contact APDL.

If you have an ArcIn card that uses FLASH memory then do NOT install
RISC OS 6 as it will not be able to boot. If you have an ArcIn card with
a plugin EEPROM (a large IC with a white label on it) then this card
will work with the RISC OS 6 Select 6i1.

This problem does NOT effect APDL Blitz interfaces.

Whichever version you have upgraded software is now available from APDL
with various improvements so even if your card will work with RISC OS 6
it is still worth upgrading.
