The watch comes from a private collection where it has clearly been looked after. Watches from this period with the fire-gilding to the watch movement and cases in such bright condition are very uncommon and with a large balance cock foot. The movement with fine round ballustar pillars and with finely made and decorated blued steel beetle and poker hands, and a fabulous under-painted horn/shell outer case, clearly well looked after, the watch is very handsome piece indeed. This is a beautifully made English key-wound man's verge paircase pocket watch, dating from in ca. 1774-1778, from the late Georgian period. The watch with stunning tortoiseshell case. The watch is in full working order and comes complete with a key for winding and presentation box. This type of repeater was no doubt used to tell the time quietly in meetings and concerts, 'dumb' repeater watches did not chime audibly, but instead produced vibrations. Finely made blued steel beetle and poker hands, a work of art to see, beautifully cut and polished, do note the delicate 5-pointed hour hand, a work of art. The bullseye glass in very fine condition. Diameter is 33 mm. The Movement: 100% mint, with richly gilded full plate in wonderful condition. The well engraved and carved rococo style balance cock and large foot in superb condition with ruby jewel to centre and most unusually a "seashell" to the cock foot. The back plate with further decoration and finely silvered Tompion time regulator plate with finely pierced and decorated additional plate. An uncut three arm steel balance, English verge escapement with flat hairspring and fusee and chain. The watch signed, Arthur Dobson of London, No 1047. The watch is keywind, comes with a key and is ticking very strongly indeed and movement size is 32 mm diameter. The movement with ballustar pillars. Polished steel movement bolt with its original blued steel ornate screw. Pierced gilded fusee stop work with iron hinge. The watch with rare feature of original fitted gilded dust cover, closing nice and tight onto the movement The movement with several high quality features. These consist of the fusee ratchet on the outside of the fusee, the third wheel is positioned at the top of the movement and the mainspring setup is under the dial via a ratchet and a highly decorative and carved case spring. The screws are original, and the gilding is still bright and fresh. The watch comes with a watch key and the watch runs the full length of the fusee chain. The Repeater: 100% mint, with two steel hammers which strike onto the two brass posts inside the case, a so-called dumb or discrete repeater. At 12.45, there are twelve ting type sounds and for the quarters, there are three ting-tang type sounds. The repeater is in full working order, working at all the hours and quarters as it should. This is a high quality 18th century English paircase verge watch, and of jewel like quality. This watch has clearly had a sheltered life and was most likely kept just for "Sunday Best", hence its very fine condition. This is a very fine period watch in simply stunning condition, which is rare collectable item or a possible investment for the future or of course a fine gift for a birthday, anniversary, wedding etc.
