SUMMARY:
A superb solid silver early 19th century highly engraved verge chain driven fusee pair-case pocket watch by Lutz Brothers of Locle, of Switzerland with a Sulley escapement. The watch is very substantial and in a 3 oz solid silver case, so requires a secure pocket. The watch has been fully serviced and overhauled by my watch maker and is keeping good  time for a 200 year old watch. The movement and case are guaranteed to be 100% original to each other, with a nice rare porcelain dial.

This escapement has been reported as a very rare watch escapment, with around only ten examples believed to exist. I suspect that there were more made, maybe around 15-20, on checking through catalogues and the internet and a number were produced by French or Swiss makers. See Pocket Watches by Reinhard Meis page 116 for a similar watch and an article by Charles Allix in the Winter 1980 edition of Antiquarian Horology about the escapement.

See also the following web-site for another example in a silver consular case: http://www.antique-watch.com/des/w5217.html for an example by Dubois de Perigueux a Paris from 1780.  This is a very nice example with the going barrel cover pierced and worked into the form of a star

Another example appeared on eBay (No: 330212202117) during March 2008, by Hovenschold of Stockholm, from c1800. A further example by a silver-gilt skeletonised watch with Sully escapement, by Jue. Verlinden of Ghent, ca. 1770, was sold by Sotheby's on 19/06/2002 in New York.

The Tavannes Watch Company took out a patent for application of this escapment to clock-work, http://www.wikipatents.com/gb/235843.html, in April 1925.

In this movement the balance staff lies in the same plane as the plate and carries the small gilt balance which is in a slot in the plate. The vertical semi-circular cock is fixed by two blue steel screws, small polished steel regulator adjusted by a square. The escapement is similar to that proposed by the English maker Sully early in the 18th century to try to reduce errors in the pendant up and dial positions.

An article on the application of Sulley's escapement has appeared on the Antiquorium web-site; http://www.antiquorum.com/vox/june_2002/marine/marine.htm and relates it to the work of Pierre Le Roy amongst others. ; The watch movement just fully cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker and with a sweet crisp action and keeping good time with a nice action.

THE DIAL: 100% mint, the original off-white colored enamel dial with fine black Roman numerals, and a separate minute track to outside of dial and small quarter hour markers and rare subsidary seconds dial. The bright enamel dial with no chips or hairline. The dial with blue steel hour and minute hands and subsidary seconds hand. The domed glass in very fine and bright condition. Diameter is 45 mm.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with richly gilded full plate in wonderful condition. The well engraved and carved rococo style balance cock and foot in superb condition with foliage and flowers to base and diamond end-stone. The back plate with further decoration and a blued steel Bosely time regulator plate. An uncut three arm steel balance, Sulley escapement with flat hairspring and fusee and chain. The watch signed by Lutz Brothers of Locle, Suisse.

The watch is keywind, comes with a key and is ticking very strongly indeed and movement size is 42 mm diameter. The movement with round ballustar pillars. Polished steel movement bolt with its original blued steel screw. Pierced gilded fusee stop work with iron hinge. The finely blued screws are original, the fusee stop is ornate and the gilding/engraving is still bright and fresh. The watch comes with a period watch key and the watch runs the full length of the fusee chain.  The watch is much brighter and  crisp than in these dark photos, which are limited by my camera and lighting equiment.  The watch is in very good working order for its age. The watch is key-wound and it is set through the rear for winding and via the central square for hands-set  through the front.

THE CASE: 100% mint, the solid silver consular case measures 51 mm outside diameter. The hinged covers closing tightly, and all in fine order. The three knuckle hinge in good order. The case with Swiss hall-marks, case maker marks and silver sterling marks and number of 923. The pendant is very well made as is the D-bow. The case of heavy gauge and a good weight and feel in the pocket, with a few tiny dings to the rear cover. The inside sealed dust cuvette, with a fine engraved pattern around the winding hole.

The watch has clearly been highly valued and well looked after. The case with a worn decoration to case band and crisp and clean top and back covers, most unusual to find. The watch case has not been buffed up or over-polished as seems to be the case so often with early watches offered on eBay. This is a high quality and very rare watch, a work of art in its own right in crisp condition and of jewel like quality. This watch has clearly had a sheltered life and was most likely kept just for "Sunday Best", hence its mint and immaculate condition.
