C1930s AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING SIGNED BY CK CHATTERTON NYC WINTER SCENE

Description

This listing is for a circa 1930s American Impressionist painting of a New York City landscape scene signed by Clarence Kerr Chatterton.  The painting is unframed oil on stretched canvas and measures 20 ¼ by 24 inches.

The painting features a winter landscape scene of New York City.  The cityscape is done in monochromatic grisaille palette with large confident brush strokes.  The foreground shows a busy street with cars and horse and carriages.  Beyond the street is small snowy park and buildings rising up behind it.  As mentioned above the painting is unframed and on its original stretcher.

The painting is signed on the back in black paint “C.K. CHATTERTON”.  This is for Clarence K. Chatterton (1880-1973) who was an impressionist painter and teacher.  He was born in Newburgh, New York and studied at the New York School of Art. During his life he credited Robert Henri with having the greatest influence on his artistic career and one can clearly see similarities in their work of every-day scenes, straight forwardness, bold approach and strong color. After his first one-man exhibition he chose as his subject matter, "small town USA," a subject he would pursue for the rest of his career. He was also known for genre, portraits, landscapes, harbors, streets, parks and beaches.  He painted mostly in the Hudson Valley and Maine.  His bold, forthright approach to painting complimented the strong sentiment he displayed in his work for rural America.

The painting is in good condition.  There is an old repair at the center right of the canvas, very minor.  Please see the many photographs for more on the look and condition of this fine American Impressionist painting.
