Fairy stories are not just for children, as anyone who has read Professor Tolkien will know. The taste for them is a natural one, at any age. In his essay, On Fairy-stories, which forms the first part of this book, he rescues them, on the one hand from the academics - the philologists and the anthropologists - and on the other, from those who would relegate them to juvenilia. The second part contains, as an apt and beautiful illustration, one of Professor Tolkien's short stories Leaf by Niggle. Like the later and more generous Lord Of the Rings, it shows his mastery of the art of 'sub-creation'. the power to give fantasy the inner consistency of reality.
Offered here, is a vintage printing of the book, published in 1965 and is a fifth printing thus, copyrighted in 1964. It consists of the aforementioned two items, the short story 'Leaf by Niggle' and an essay 'On Fairy-Stories'.
In Tolkien's own written Introductory note:
These two things, On Fairy-stories and Leaf by Niggle, are here reprinted and issued together. They are no longer easy to obtain, but they may still be found interesting, especially by those to whom The Lord of the Rings has given pleasure. Though one is an essay and the other a story, they are related: by the symbols of Tree and Leaf, and by both touching indifferent ways on what is called int he essay 'sub-creation'. Also they were written in the same period (1938-1939) when The Lord of the Rings was beginning to unroll itself and to unfold prospects of labour and exploration in yet unknown country as daunting to me as to the hobbits. At about that time we had reached Bree, and I had then no more notion they had of what had become of Gandalf or who Strider was; and I had begun to despair of surviving to find out.
The essay was originally composed as an Andrew Lang Lecture and was in a shorter form delivered in the University of St. Andrews in 1938, It was eventually published, with a little enlargement, as one of the items in Essays presented to Charles Williams, Oxford University Press, 1947, now out of print. It is here reproduced with only a few minor alterations.
It has not been changed since it reached manuscript form, very swiftly, one day when I awoke with it already in mind. One of its sources was a great-limbed poplar tree that I could see eve lying in bed. It was suddenly lopped and mutilated by its owner, I do not know why. It is cut down now, a less barbarous punishment for any crimes it may have been accused of, such as being large and alive. I do not subscribe to "grading" as frankly, grading is totally inconsistent and most of the "graders" TRULY have no clue, so I will use plain English if it is ok with you...
*A very gently handled and previously read copy of this fantastic Tolkien gem in GREAT condition, with original priced and unclipped dustjacket as issued! This book is bound in red cloth with blue lettering on the spine and front cover. The binding is tight and solid and all pages are crisp and clear showing a minimal amount of shelfwear from handling to the edges and corners of the dustjacket and and the spine is lightly sun faded. I have placed it inside of a Brodart Jacket protector so it is once again whole. The pages have started to yellow with age. This vintage collectible copy and should be in any serious Tolkien library. A FEW WORDS ON TOLKIEN COLLECTIBILITY...I have been collecting Tolkien books for over 30 years and it really galls me to find people selling items for ridiculous prices claiming they are "rare" or "highly collectible"; and what's worse is, naive people are paying it~! The fact is, there are relatively few "RARE" Tolkien items on eBay and most of the stuff claimed as such, just isn't. Granted, some may be hard to find, but not rare. In order to be a VALUABLE collectible, the books need to be immaculate or close to it, a scarce or extremely early printing of an early edition and if it comes with a dust jacket, that too should be close to fine. Otherwise, they are just common items not worth much, but people are paying gobs of cash, caught up in the frenzy.
Before you pay high bucks
on a RARE or COLLECTIBLE edition, ask questions and demand to see a picture. Even though the copyright may say 1966 for example, it can still be a 1981 or even 1997 printing, but the copyright was last renewed in 1966 so it is being sold as such. I've even seen 1960's paperback copyright being sold for unreal prices, and they are actually a 23rd or such printing! I don't believe all sellers are trying to be dishonest, some just don't know any better... Please be careful and bid wisely. If you have any questions regarding it's authenticity or collectibility, check it out and be certain you are bidding on what you THINK you are bidding on.
