THE MAN BEHIND the new Demons (Checker, Chuck and Cheeky) and the club’s 2010 Christmas cards and video says it was a dream job to bring these features to life.
Jon Brocker relished the opportunity to combine his love of Melbourne with his passion for art, as he explains.
“I’ve always drawn and it’s what I do - that’s why this is probably the greatest job I’ll ever do, because it’s my two favourite things: drawing and Melbourne,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“To combine the two was pretty good.”
A full-time illustrator, the 31 year-old does most of his work through WEG art - famous for the AFL premiership posters.
But when Melbourne chief executive Cameron Schwab saw some of Brocker’s work, he got the nod to come up with the new Demons.
“It all started when my brother did some YouTube videos, then Cam saw them. Through Cam’s Twitter, he had a bit of a competition and my brother won a Tom Scully jumper,” Brocker said.
“He went in to see Cam, and I gave my brother some caricatures of Liam Jurrah and Tom Scully. I gave them to my brother to give to Cam to see if he wanted me to do any work for the club.
“He liked what I did and at the time they were doing the mascot and Cam said ‘do you want to have a go and see what you can come up with?’ and it all went from there.”
The 31 year-old is a mad Demon, having followed the club since birth, with James Frawley and Jack Grimes his favourite players.
“I’m a lifelong Melbourne supporter - you didn’t have a choice growing up in my family,” Brocker said.
