The Hornet CV-8 was launched in December 14, 1940 by Newport News
Shipbuilding in Virginia. It was sponsored by Annie Reid Knox, who was
the wife of Frank M. Knox, Secretary of the Navy. It was the seventh
Hornet Aircraft of the United States Navy. The USS Hornet CV-8 was a
Yorktown class aircraft carrier of World War II. It was well known for
launching the Doolittle Raid, participating in the Battle of Midway, and
for its contribution in the Solomons. It then became irreparably
damaged during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.
