Of all the toys that boys of this period could want, a Gilbert American Flyer train was always high on the list. (My wife reminds me that she had her own engineers cap in 1957) Gilbert American Flyer two and three-rail trains looked real and were available with smoke and choo-choo, horns and whistles, operating lights, realistic-looking couplers and bright paint schemes that matched prototype railroads. Powerful 0-6-0 Switcher Freight Train Set No. 4014
Introduced in 1938 for the first time this set featured the #429 0-6-0 switcher engine and tender (#431 officially as a set) with operating head and taillight. It can remotely pause or reverse direction and has been professionally serviced.
A special note is that it was pictured #4321 in the catalog for its three year run but none left the factory bearing that number.
Cars included were the #412 Borden's milk car, #410 oil or tank car, #408 boxcar with sliding doors, and the #411 lighted caboose with cupola.
These cars were 9.5" long with brass fitting and ladders.
The tenders tended to warp and are hard to find while this one is straight. It looks like there are threads for a taillight lens but I have never seen one with a lens and it may never have been made??.

The set shows signs of normal use and partial restoration and is fully serviceable.
We give our best attention to every detail in order to deliver a set that is fully operational and as much the way it would have been delivered sixty years ago as possible.
All of the engines and E-units have been professionally evaluated and/or serviced. Transformers and electrical equipment have been checked and repaired as needed, including bulbs.
It is amazing how well built these “toys” were, having been constructed with materials that will continue to endure. Equipment is guaranteed to be as described upon delivery. However, no warranty is offered due to the toys' vintage.
Be sure this item is what you want as the set is sold as is, without returns. Continuous supervision is required when used by children.
Even when new, (I was there), these sets offered challenges that promoted imagination, problem solving skills and ingenuity. This is why model trains have always been considered a great bonding opportunity between the older generations and the new.
