You are bidding on a rare antique Topsy Turvy cloth doll! I found this piece at an estate sale along with more antique & vintage dolls and a lot of other interesting items! Check out my other items!

Description:

• Antique Topsy Turvy doll
• Patent date of July 8, 1901
• Cloth doll with printed mask faces. Faces are molded (You can see how the molded mask face is fitted to the cloth head of the white doll)
• Half of the doll is a white doll
• The other half is a black or African American child
• When you hold the white doll up to play, she has white hands and brown legs or shoes (the legs are actually the arms of the black doll)
• When you hold the black doll up to play, she has black hands and white legs or stockings (the legs are the hands of the white doll)
• The dolls are sharing a red & white homespun checked skirt
• The white doll has a red checked bodice, a white apron, and a ruffled mob cap
• The black doll has a red bodice, a pinafore, and a red bandana
• Hair is printed for the white doll
• Coarse hair for the black doll
• Shoulder plate of the white doll is printed with the date Pat. July 8, 1901
• From the Babyland Rag line of dolls
• A very scarce doll

Maker: Attributed to Albert Bruckner for E. I Horsman, New York (according to the Blue Book of Dolls by Jan Foulke)

Size:

• 14" tall

Condition:

• Used
• White areas of the doll & clothing have yellowed
• Staining and light soil on the doll from being played with over the years
• Mask face is a little loose on the white doll. Can be touched with glue if desired
• Mask face on the black doll is slightly indented around the mouth. I believe this is where the glue was
• Wear on the nose of the black doll
• 2 slightly open seams on the clothing of the black doll (see photos - 1 is on the cuff of the sleeve & the other is under the arm)
• Overall good condition considering the rarity & age of the doll
• A real collector's piece
