Here is a rare piece of Native American pottery by Mary A. Histia (1881-1973). Known as "Acoma Mary", she is considered by many as the mother of modern Acoma Pueblo pottery. Her work is in many museums and collections. She even made pottery for President Roosevelt and other noteworthy people.

This particular jar was probably made sometime in the 1950's or 60's. It measures 8.75" tall and 7.75" at it's widest point. It has beautiful fine line designs with checkerboard medallions. It is in excellent condition for it's age. It does show a number of small pock marks or spalls, which is common on Acoma pieces of this period due to impurities in the clay. There is a small rub in the paint on one of the medallions. It is signed on the bottom "Made by Mary A. Histia, Acoma Sky City, N. Mex." There are two old shop tags from that era on the bottom, evidence that this jar was bought from a dealer shortly after it's creation. Otherwise there are no chips, cracks or repairs to this gorgeous jar. Just a little FYI: A Mary Histia jar holds the record for the private sale of a historic Pueblo pot in 1998 at $450,000. Please see the pictures included in this listing, and email us if you have any questions.
