eBay
On rare occasion does a fan/lace fancier sell some of her treasure.  Time has come and YOU are among the gifted few who have a chance to own one of these marvels.

Fan #4 is late 1800s, handmade, ecru toned Italian Burano Needlelace hand fan.  The clues are the square mesh needle ground and the motifs that look a lot like Duchesse, but made with needle instead.  Nice contrast of open ground (still pretty solid) and very dense vs light motifs.  Its mesh is made with spaced buttonhole like other needle grounds, but the second row of stitching pulls the meshes square.  Clever technique.  Sometimes the background looks quite stripey if the linen thread is very thick/thin for the length of the fibers.  Scale and contrast are important here.  Mother of Pearl sticks and guards are a perfect match for this fan.  They are accented with two-toned gilt patterns.  The screw rivet holds a brass ribbon loop.  Condition excellent.  Size - 8 1/2" closed. Thank you to Kate Henry, lacemaker and lecturer, for the description.
