It could be down to the simple fact that you didn't set the height of your tee correctly.

Choosing the right tee length is crucial, as it will ensure the club face strikes the ball at the correct height and angle.

Basically tees are separated into three sizes: small, medium and large.

• Small tees: 54 mm (2 1/8 inches) and under
  These tees are recommended for irons, hybrids, 5, 7, 9 and 11 woods.
• Medium tees: between 56 - 80 mm (2 1/4 - 3 1/8 inches)
  These tees are for fairway woods and drivers under 360cc
• Large tees: 83mm (3 1/4 inches) and over
  These tees are for drivers over 360cc the big whales

This 54 mm (2 1/8") wooden tee is a small tee and normally used for irons or hybrid clubs. With bright color painted, they can be easily find in the green.

How to set the right tee height:

The ideal height to place the tee at is dependant on your driver of choice.

Rule of thumb on setting the tee height:

• With a driver and fairway wood, about half the ball needs to be above the top edge of the clubhead. This will place the ball right at the club face sweet spot while swinging, giving you maximum distance.
• With the long irons, about a quarter of the ball is above the top edge of the clubhead.
• With the middle and short irons, the ball is even with the top edge of the clubhead.

However you don't need to buy all the sizes and carry them arround. You could buy longer tees and then push them in the ground to the appropriate height.
