- The terminology used for wheels of "contact wheel,"  "idler wheel", and "drive wheel"  can be confusing.

Here is how I use those terms:

-Contact wheel- the lower wheel in a belt sander set up that is used for hollow grinding. It may be either a driven or idler wheel, depending on your set up.If idler it will either have bearings in it so it may spin on a fixed shaft or be keyed to a shaft that spins.

-Idler wheel- A wheel that has bearings in it or whose shaft spins in bearings and is driven by the sanding belt, not shaft or motor

-Drive wheel -A wheel that does not have bearings in it and is secured to the shaft, either directly to a motor shaft or to a shaft driven by a pulley or coupling. The drive wheel is often keyed to the shaft with a 3/16" woodruff or square key. Drive wheels never have bearings in them.
