New Exotique 37, digital replica
In 1998, Benedict Taschen published a complete reprint of the first 36 issues Exotique. The three volume, slip-case anthology does not include copies of issues 37 and 38.

For those interested in this esoteric corner of publishing history, we offer an ebook version of Exotique No. 37, published in 1959. Although the cover shows “No. 37”, the word “NEW” is positioned above the nameplate. Most of the preceding issues expressed Exotique in a streamlined script. Issue 37 shows the name in block letters.

Number 37 features a well-written article about corsets — their history, uses and construction — by Betty Williams. Many unexpected details of the corset's illustrious history are disclosed for the edification of enthusiasts. A short story by Arthur Donald tells of a well-dressed, well-shod teacher who learns something from her students. Letters from readers are accompanied by a few snapshots. Two pages offer opinions of the editor, probably Mr. Burtman.

The remainder of the magazine consists of photos of pretty models in stockings, high heels and foundation garments, and four illustrations by Gene Bilbrew.

New Exotique 37, optimized for ebook viewing
The useable pictures in this issue yielded an optimized ebook of only 20 pages. To make the optimized ebook a bit more substantial, we've added 20 of the best pictures from Correspondence Annual, another of Mr. Burtman's 1959 product. Six Gene Bilbrew illustrations, and photos of women in stockings, corsets and high heels, optimized for clarity and convenience.

PROCESS
The pages are monochrome and were scanned at 600 dpi grayscale and reduced to 155 dpi. I squared the text blocks and adjusted the tonality of the photos. I reduced or eliminated empty margins and cropped out the carpet, curtains and furniture to make the images of the models larger on the pages. Specks and streaks were retouched. I maintained the original layouts of most pages. As a consequence of the photo adjustments, the optimized presentation, and the flexibility of Acrobat Reader, there has never been a better way to see the picture content of Exotique 37 than these ebook versions.

The ebook .pdf files are 54 mb and 37 mb.

The scans were assembled as a book in a publishing program. Then, the file was exported to Acrobat .pdf format. Acrobat files are opened in Acrobat Reader, available without charge for both PC and MAC platforms at adobe.com. Users can open picture-viewing and video programs while reading ebooks in Acrobat Reader.
