The prolonged knot is still used on classic tall ships to protect the sails from chafing against the hardware that connects the boom to the mast. Many classic ships can still be seen with these in place on their main mast. 

The prolonged knots have also transitioned from ships to countless classic, coastal homes. Originally found at the back entrance for friends and relatives to clean their boots, the beauty of these knotted mats has led them to move from the utility door to center stage at formal, front doors and entryways.
