This flower played a big role in Egyptian mythology (symbolizing the rise and fall of the sun), and it was used as a sacrament in Egyption religious rituals. It is most commonly consumed in teas, wines, martinis, and it is sometimes smoked as well. Its sedative effects come from the alkaloids nuciferine and aporphine. Blue lotus is also used in aromatherapy as well as some perfumes.
