About this Map

This map was first published in Germany in 1872 and is extraordinarily detailed. Close
examination of the map shows many features that one would expect to find only on much larger maps. Editions continuing well into the 20th century. It was one of the most comprehensive and best executed 19th century German atlases. The original atlas is bound in half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Stieler's Hand Atlas" stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine.

We chose this map due to it's elegance, movement, and impressive coverage of the Pacific Northwest.

Map artist Lisa Middleton grew up exploring the Mississippi River valley with her family. Many of her subjects are drawn from life experiences in Nepal, China, Haiti, the South Caribbean, her beloved mountains, and the coulees of Upper Mississippi River. Lisa’s art has embellished book covers, CD covers, and Madision Avenue brochures. Her historic map reproductions are often described as being the most beautiful available on the internet today.
