40pin (Type A) Screen Adapter Cable for The GBA AGS-101 Backlight Screen Mod

What is this Adapter Cable?

This cable will allow you to fit a backlit screen into your Nintendo Game Boy Advance console.

What will I need?
  • The correct version of this cable
  • A backlit "AGS-101" Screen
  • A Game Boy Advance Console
  • 15cm Solid Core 30AWG Mod Wire (Included)
Which Cable do I need?

There are three versions of this cable, the "32pin", "40pin Type A" and "40pin Type B" they are all different so you must use the correct cable.

The "32pin"
adapter will only fit Game Boy Advance consoles with a "32pin" screen connector.
The "40pin Type A" adapter will only fit Game Boy Advance Consoles with a "40pin" connector, this cable also requires you to modify the motherboard to get the screen working correctly
The "40pin Type B" adapter will only fit Game Boy Advance Consoles with a "40pin" connector, this cable doesn't require any modding of the motherboard and is easier to install

Both 40pin adapters work however one requires less modding than the other so choose which cable you prefer based on your skill level.

How do I know if my Game Boy Advance is a 32pin or 40pin connector version?

The easiest way is to remove the battery door cover and look through the hole. You can see the green motherboard with white writing printed on the motherboard. If the first number is a 1 e.g. (10 1-2) you have a "32pin" motherboard. If the first number is a 0 e.g. (03 4-1) you have a "40pin" motherboard.

Which AGS-101 Screen do I need?

To perform this mod you will need an "AGS-101" Backlit Screen. You can find these screens inside Game Boy Advance SP consoles with the model number "AGS-101". New OEM screens are also available and are sold in our store. Originally there were two versions of these screens. One version is Brown at the end of the cable which attaches to the motherboard, the other is White. All new OEM screens are the White tab version and work on all GBA consoles with the correct adapter cable.

How Do I Install This Cable?

To install the 40pin (Type A) cable, Solder the included wire to P1 on the adapter cable and solder the other end to DA1 or similar power source on the motherboard. This wire provides power to the backlight, the screen may function without it but the image will be dimmer.

Further steps are necessary to get this cable working if your're using a White Tab (OEM) AGS-101 screen in order to get a perfect image and solve the "Washed Out" effect. You have two options one easy and one hard. If you are using an original Brown Tab GBA SP AGS-101 screen you do not need to do anything else. Note: Brown Tab screens are not available new you can only remove one from a working original AGS-101 GBA SP.

Option 1 (Easy - 90% Perfect Image)

Solder a small jumper wire from points 103 to GND on the GBA motherboard. Google "103 to GND" for lots of guides on how to do this. With this method the screen will suffer from "Ghosting" and "Image Retention" where the previous screen may still be visible for a short time when the image changes. Some users are happy with this as it's a relatively easy mod to perform and does produce an acceptable image.

Option 2 (Hard - Perfect Image)

This option requires making permanent changes to your GBA motherboard by desoldering components and may not be suitable for novices. 5 components

(C54, Q3, R16, R17 and C33) must be removed. A jumper wire must be soldered between REVC and P2-VEE.
