Origin & History

Woven In: Woven in Belgium.

History: Le Gout Fonce, or The Taste, is a jacquard wall tapestry made in Belgium. It comes from the The Lady with the Unicorn series originally woven in 1510 by Willem de Pannemaker, and featuring the arms of Jean le Viste who originally commissioned the 6 tapestries. Each represent one of the senses except for the final A Mon Seul Desir, commonly considered to be a declaration of love. These masterpieces were lost until 1844 when novelist George Sand discovered them in Boussac suffering from damage from rats and damp walls. The Cluny Museum in Paris purchased them in 1883 and restored them. They are now considered among the national treasures of France.
