Usage: To Generate Any colour you want, Mix in a few of these Very Highly Concentrated colourant pellets, to large amounts of White / natural coloured plastic at different ratios to generate almost any colour you want. The ratio is approximately 1 Part colour to 50 parts white for a single colour (See the mixing chart below for mixed colours) . These pellets are super saturated. You only need very little per batch. Mix them well so they distribute evenly. They use the same concept as 4 colour CMYK printer ink to generate any colour you want. These pellets are officially known as masterbatch colourant and are made of hyper saturated solidified pigment powder designed specifically for melting with plastic. (think of concentrated laser printer ink with plastic properties). These pellets have very low plastic content so they must be added to plastic.

Melting / flow point: This masterbatch is designed for use with plastic, particularly ABS plastic (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), but is also compatible with other forms of thermoplastic of similar melting temperature. It has similar characteristics to ABS and starts to melt and get soft from around 105°C. For it to flow, you'd need to get it to between 180 to 225°C. it starts to flow like thick melted chocolate, making it easy to mix with melted plastic. The maximum recommended temperature is 270°C after which is may start to burn and change colour. Adding colourant doesn't significantly affect the melt temperature of the plastic it is added to.

Flow rate: Adding colourant significantly slows down the flow rate by anywhere from 10% to 70% especially on low pressure and auger (screw/drill type) plastic injection machines, so reduce manufacture and 3D printing speed accordingly to compensate. Switching colours may take some time as you have to push the old color out of the machine's flow channels (this takes much longer with dark colors like black). Flow rate also depends on temperature and pressure. The hotter and harder you press, the faster plastic will flow / move. The flow rate of colourant generally follows the plastic it is added to. ABS flows at ~1.5 to 3 grams per minute at 240°C when a light 10kg weight is placed on top of it (according to ATSM D1238 flow rate test), so adjust accordingly..

Density and Pellet size: Each pellet is on average around 3mm x 3mm x 3mm (see pictures). The black pellets are round like pebbles, the rest are cylinder shaped.
1 cubic centimetre (1cm x 1cm x 1cm) of colourant pellets weigh around 1 gram, about the same as ABS plastic. Colourant is Very saturated. So you actually only need a few % as part of the mix to get a good rich colour.

Tensile Strength: Solid colourant pellets are relatively fragile, and must be mixed with plastic in order to be practically usable. The tensile strength of plastic it is added to is only slightly reduced by this colourant by the volume it is added in. In most practical cases it is less than 10%.

Colour Base: These ABS pellets are best mixed with White coloured plastic as the base main plastic component. White is the natural colour of ABS plastic. But you can use it with other pre-coloured plastic to change their colours further. (For example if you already have yellow plastic, you can change it to red by adding magenta colourant). Using with clear plastic creates coloured clear plastic, Note: If you already have black plastic, adding colourant won't change it.

Packaging Method and weight: Colourant pellets are Super Saturated. In practical use, you won't need more than 150 grams to colour a Kilogram worth of plastic to almost any colour you want, So we sell them in packs of 240g either as individual colours or a mixture of all 4, enough for at least 1 or 2 Kilograms and plenty of colourful plastic.
You are paying for 240 grams (net weight) of Colourant pellets, which comes as a ~250gram (gross weight) bag. Australia post requires us to include packaging in the calculation so 240g is the maximum Net weight possible to offer you low cost 250g postage. The pellets are air tight sealed in low humidity, so Silicia Gel / Desiccant are optional. We can swap 5g of pellets for a desiccant bag for you if you want.

These values are rough approximates only based on colour theory, and are based on a ratio of 1 parts colourant to 25 parts white plastic base material (example : 4g to 100g)
The actual numbers will vary depending on the density and natural colour of the plastic you mix them with.
Basically add more colourant to boost the colour, and reduce the colourant to get less colour.

Black is obtained basically 3 in 1 (Cyan Magenta and Yellow combined).. So using black where possible helps save the other 3 colours..

This is best done only once peak saturation is reached then you can safely darken with black colourant sparingly.

If you use too little colourant, then the colour may not be consistent (you may get patches of white).
To overcome patches, crush the colourant pellets to smaller sizes so you can mix them more thoroughly with the main plastic material.

Black colourant is very highly saturated, it will easily overpower other colours.
Colourant take some time to appear depending on how large your mixing and melting chamber is.

Please ensure your equipment has sufficient space in the melting chamer / areas for the colours to mix properly.

You can mix them if desired with these colourant in different ratios to either get increased flow rate, surface texture or strength.

Why not use Red Green Blue (RGB) ?

RGB is used for "light emitters"; (like cinema projectors / light bulbs),
Mixing RGB 'Light' create white light..
But plastic doesn't emit light, and mixing RGB plastic creates Black. Not White.
The colours block/cancel each other and there are some colours that cannot easily be created with RGB.

CMYK is the Hue opposite of RGB and works perfectly for "light absorbers". (like paper or plastic)
That's why almost all colour printers now use CMYK, not RGB
It's so much easier and plenty of colour reference tables exist for CMYK colour printers so it's easy to get your desired colour.

General warning about High Speed 3D Printing and Plastic Injection
Unless your machinery is specifically desiged for high speed, please remember:

1. Cold Coloured ABS plastic entering at high speed, (e.g in 3D Printers) VERY RAPIDLY COOLS DOWN THE INNER SURFACE
2. Temperature sensors and heaters are near, but NOT on the inner surfaces itself. (Just close by).
3. This inner surface cooling happens BEFORE THE SENSORS DETECTS IT. Because heat takes time to reach the sensor.
4. By then it's too late and PLASTIC WILL HARDEN AND CLOG the flow channels and will skip parts till it is reheated again.
5. For example Your sensor may report 235°C but in reality, the inner surfaces may be as low as 180°C, which hardens plastic till it jams.

So, please remember that FAST SPEEDS = "UNDETECTED RAPID COOLING OF INNER SURFACES = PLASTIC HARDENING = JAMMING.
Adding colourant increases the temperature and melting time, so you'll need to print slower with coloured plastic.
In 3D printers, if you print too fast, you will notice this as plastic flow starting and stopping/jamming abrnormally in rythms, or Motor and filament grinding or skipping.
You can compensate by boosting temperatures to the maximum safe temperature possible, at least 270°C "AT THE SENSOR" for printing at high speed,
so the plastic remains at a good melting/flowing temperature even on the inner flow surfaces, and also by using a high flow ABS like MG94, or simply printing slower.
