UTIs AND CRANBERRY EXTRACT

Cranberries have been used for years to combat UTIs, which it is best known for, especially for those with recurrent casess. The high level of proanthocyanidins (PACs) in cranberries helps reduce the adhesion of certain bacteria to the urinary tract walls, in turn fenfing off Sad bacteria for good. A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in February 2016 reported that while cranberry extract supplements have been shown to help UTIs, cranberry juice is far less effective. The reason for this is that it takes an extremely large concentration of cranberry may help prevent bacterial adhesion. This amount of concentration is not found in the juices we drink. It appears that the supplement's high levels of antioxidants called proanthocyanidins help reduce the adhesion of certain bacteria to urinary tract walls, which in turn can help to reduce the incidence of UTIs. The discovery that cranberries prevent UTIs by blocking adhesion of bacteria to the urinary tract lining is a discovery that has allowed research on cranberry to expand out in other important directions too!

CRANBERRIES FOR ULCERS

Certain types of stomach ulcers are related to a particular type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, and it's possible that cranberries may help prevent this bacteria from attaching to the lining of the stomach, similar to how they can help prevent bacteria from attaching to the lining of the urinary tract. Cranberries are able to do this because they contain a molecule called non-dialyzable material, or NDM, which coats some bodily surfaces with a Teflon-like substance and prevents infection-causing agents from taking root. The substance has no effect on the good bacteria. Then researchers back in 1991 found that the berries could protect against bacterial invasion in the bladder, they then decided to see where else the healing properties would work and found this unexpected surprise!

CRANBERRY EXTRACT AND DENTAL HEALTH

A team led by oral biologist Hyun (Michel) Koo, D.D.S., Ph.D., at the URMC has discovered that the same traits that make cranberry juice a powerful weapon against bladder problems also hold promise for protecting teeth against cavities. Koo found that cranberry juice acts like teflon for teeth, making it difficult for the bacteria that causes cavities to cling to tooth surfaces. Stickiness is everything for the microbe Streptococcus mutans, which creates most cavities by eating sugars and then excreting acids that cause dental decay. “Scientists believe that one of the main ways that cranberries prevent UTI's is by inhibiting the adherence of pathogens on the surface of the bladder. Perhaps the same is true in the mouth, where bacteria use adhesion molecules to hold onto teeth,” Koo said. Koo’s team also found evidence that cranberry juice disrupts the formation of the building block of plaque, known as a glucan. Like a mason using cement to build a wall brick by brick, bacteria use enzymes known as glucosyltransferases to build dental plaque piece by piece, quickly forming a gunky fortress that covers the tooth and gives bacteria a safe haven to munch on sugar, thrive, and churn out acid. Koo’s team found that cranberry juice prevents bacteria from forming plaque by inhibiting those enzymes and by stopping additional bacteria from glomming on to the ever-growing goo.

CRANBERRY IS A CARDIOVASCULAR BOOST

Some evidence suggests that the polyphenols in cranberries may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by preventing platelet build-up and reducing blood pressure via anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The antioxidant components of cranberries also appear to play a key role in cranberry's cardiovascular benefits. In studies, these antioxidant benefits have been clearly associated with decreased risk of high blood pressure. By reducing oxidative stress inside the blood vessels, cranberry extracts consumed by the test subjects have helped them with overconstriction of the blood vessels and unwanted increases in blood pressure. The polyphenols may even help prevent the build-up of plaque on vessel walls.

CRANBERRY'S ANTI-INFLAMMATORY BENEFITS

For the cardiovascular system and for many parts of the digestive tract (including the mouth and gums, stomach, and colon) cranberry has been shown to provide important anti-inflammatory benefits. It's the phytonutrients in cranberry that are especially effective in lowering our risk of unwanted inflammation, and virtually all of the phytonutrient categories represented in cranberry are now known to play a role. These phytonutrient categories include proanthocyanidins (PACs), anthocyanins (the flavonoid pigments that give cranberries their amazing shades of red), flavonols like quercetin, and phenolic acid (like hydroxycinnamic acids). Dietary consumption of cranberry has also been shown to reduce the risk of chronic, unwanted inflammation in the stomach, large intestine (colon) and cardiovascular system (especially blood vessel linings).

DIGESTIVE TRACT BENEFITS OF CRANBERRY

When you add up the health-related benefits of cranberry for our mouth and gum, stomach, and colon, it's impossible not to conclude that cranberry is unique among fruits in its ability to provide us with digestive tract benefits as well. Every category of phytonutrient known to be provided by cranberry is also known to play a role in digestive tract support. In the case of cranberry's proanthocyanidins, it's decreased adherence of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori to our stomach wall that's made possible by intake of cranberry. In the case of cranberry's flavonoids, anthocyanins and triterpenoids, provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits that decrease our risk of colon complications. Recent research has also shown that cranberry may be able to help optimize the balance of bacteria in our digestive tract.
