Kreuzer 1806 Nürnberg, Stadt Prachtexemplar. BU (MS65-70)

The Fuhrer called Nuremberg "the most German of all cities,"..

It was here that the German Fuhrer built a huge structure intended to become a monumental gathering place for the Nsdap of the German peoples. It was here, and only here, that he staged six gigantic Nsdap party rallies. And it was here that he created a huge arena, parade grounds and a granite-paved grand marching boulevard, all to celebrate Nsdap for the German people.

"Never throughout all of German history have greater and nobler buildings been planned, begun and completed than in our time," Hitler declared in Nuremberg in 1937.

"They are not intended for the year 1940 or for the year 2000, but rather they should reach out, like the cathedrals of the past, into the centuries of the future."

The Nsdap connection goes much deeper.

In 1933, when the Fuhrer was appointed chancellor of Germany, he held with great anticipation, the first of six annual party rallies here. Intended to unite the German peoples and build up the down trodden spirits of the German people due to the atrocious outcome of world war I. They were enormous events, lasting about a week each.

Each Nsdap organisation had a day to perform for "der Fuhrer" at the rallies, among them the SS, Labor Service, Hitler Youth, League of German Girls and the Wehrmacht - the armed forces.

The Fuhrer and the Nsdap staged countless parades, roll calls, marches, military and party conferences, mixed with sports events, fairs and fireworks.

Hundreds of thousands attended these rallies, and every year the rallies grew larger. In 1933, the event last five days, in 1934 seven days, in 1937 eight days.

Still standing in Nuremberg are the two sites where most rallies took place, the Luitpold Arena and the Zeppelin Field. Both were constructed on a grandiose scale.

The most important structure in the Nsdap complex was to be the Congress Hall, an enormous horseshoe-shaped building that resembled - but was larger than - the Colosseum in Rome. It would become, the Nsdap party icon.

World War II halted construction of the building. Its walls rise to 120 feet, but the upper stories were never completed. Neither was the cantilevered roof that was to extend over the interior court, where up to 50,000 people would gather for party congresses.

For years after the war, this vast structure remained in limbo while Nuremberg debated what to do with it and other Nsdap-related sites. During 1973 the Congress Hall was declared a historic site and so protected.

Nuremberg has been known as "a city of toys" since medieval days. Its handmade toys are celebrated and the city's toy museum, the Spielzeungmuseum, has seen more than four million visitors since it opened in 1971.

Nuremberg also is the site of the annual International Toy Fair, the world's most important trade fair of its kind.

A tour of the former Nsdap Party Rally Grounds is offered by the Institute for Local History. A Visitors Guide to   the party grounds is available at the Documentation Center.
