Dhurrie rugs are flat-weave rugs with origins in India, and their strong, hearty weaves and affordability make them excellent choices for floor coverings in busy homes. They have no pile, and no backing which makes them reversible, easy to care for, and in some cases, washable. Often crafted from either cotton, wool, jute or silk, they’re thin like mats, good for year-round use, and also make great decorative bed covers and throws over the back of couches for an extra pop of color.
The coolest thing about dhurries (and traditional rugs from other cultures like Persia, Turkey, and the Orient)? There’s more to their story than just being a floor covering. In India’s case, dhurries were pure function before they became prized for their colorful patterns. Used as an under-layer beneath bedding for extra comfort, they were later used as floor coverings, and smaller dhurries, or Aasans, were used for meditation.
