Knightia Fish Fossil

Condition: Excellent  / This piece has been professionally prepared and the fins have been restored.

Measurements: Fish length measures 2 3/8" end to end. The limestone plate that this fish rest upon measures an approximate 3 7/16" wide and 2 9/16" tall. The plate thickness is 3/16".

 

This fossil is from southwestern Wyoming, found at the Kemmerer Green River formation. The ancient lakes unusual chemistry made it possible for preservation of the dead fish and other aquatic organisms to fossilize at bottom between layers of limestone. 

This rich area containing fossils was discovered in the 1870's. More than a million perfectly preserved fossil fish have been recovered.
