Event Publicity Poster Stamp

Publicity poster stamp for an industrial exposition held in the new Delco Building in Dayton Ohio. The stamp reproduces an official poster produced for the event, except that the year date is not shown on the stamp. This show was a major event for the city of Dayton, which had experienced serious flooding in 1913 which ruined much of the city.
The following is an excerpt from "The American City", (Volume 14 - Jan-June 1916), a journal with articles written by many contributors:
    An Industrial Exposition

Dayton, Ohio. - The Industrial Exposition which was held in Dayton January 14 to 22, under the auspices of the Greater Dayton Association, furnished abundant evidence that Dayton has risen triumphant from the ruins into which the flood of 1913 plunged the city. To convince the world of that fact was one of the purposes of the undertaking. There was felt to be a need, also, for an exhibition that would bring into one composite whole all the diversified industries and products of the city in order to satisfy the captains of industry of the stability and diversity of Dayton's institutions. The undertaking was born of a zeal for advancement.

Through the courtesy of the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company, the handsome new Delco building was furnished to the Greater Dayton Association free of rent for the occasion. Space was therefore leased at low rates, which, however, covered the cost of booths, decorations, publicity and entertainment.

To insure the success of the exposition and make it truly representative of Dayton's resources, $25,000 was expended before the exposition was opened. Of this amount, $6,000 was used for publicity, which included paid advertising in 70 newspapers, 500 posters, a million poster stamps and the advertising literature. The remainder of the $25,000 was spent in the interior of the building for booths, decorations, etc. A different color and decorative scheme was designed for each floor. There were fountains of running water in the midst of waving palms and ferns, and beauty and harmony prevailed throughout.

The exhibits occupied seven floors of the Delco Building, the floor space aggregating five acres. They ranged from the magnificent mansion and lawn, presented in miniature, the automobile and more cumbersome of the farming implements, down to the smallest products of the finer arts. The exposition was made up of ten separate exhibitions, viz., the Automobile Show, Pure Food Show, Mercantile Style Show, Business Appliance Show, Flower Show, Electrical Show, Municipal Exhibit, the Advertising Exhibit and Machinery Hall.

The value of the exhibits exceeded three quarters of a million dollars.

For the comfort of the visitors a day nursery was provided for young children; there were rest rooms and a hospital, check rooms, and a committee on safety and comfort. Light refreshments were sold at standard prices.

The admission price to the exhibition was ten cents. The project was not a money-making one, and nothing on the premises was sold except for future delivery.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).

Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.

A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.

* A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
