Hugh Goldwin Rivière (1869–1956) was a noted British
portraitist.
This is a superb oil painting on canvas. A portrait of a teenage
boy, signed 1926.
Born in Bromley he was one of seven children of animal
painter Briton Rivière, of Huguenot descent. He was educated at St. Andrews
University and then studied at the Royal Academy Schools.
Goldwin primarily painted portraits, for which he was
elected into the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as many literary
subjects including illustrating lines from Christina Rossetti and Tennyson. He
exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1893 and 1904.
Examples of his work are held in a very wide variety of public
collections, including the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath, Guildhall Art Gallery
and Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Royal Shakespeare Company,
Cheltenham Art Gallery, Gloucestershire County Council, and the Royal Albert
Memorial Museum, Exeter. His portrait painting of Sir Squire Bancroft and
several drawings and prints are in the National Portrait Gallery collection.
Painting canvas size 460mm x 350mm
The painting is in overall excellent condition without any damage to the canvas. Described for completeness there is a couple of very tiny areas on the canvas that are slightly thin - one of the photos is taken in bright sunlight to highlight this. When hung on the wall these areas of thin canvas cannot be seen. These areas are only barely viewable from the rear, when the painting is viewed from the front these thin areas of canvas cannot be seen therefore do not spoil the painting. The item could benefit from cleaning for a painting of 90 years of age. Reasonable offers welcome with the condition accurately described.
