Danto (1929-2010) was one of the finest lyrical tenor voices in the post war cantorial ranks.  Early training in synagogues, especially under cantor Dasvid Moshe Steinberg.  He fled the Nazi’s first moving to Russia, then to the United States.  After the War he was discovered by Beniamino Gigli and Tito Schipa.  He did spend time studying with Schipa.  He served as Cantor Jewish Center of Atlantic Beach, New York, Park Synagogue in Cleveland, Ohio, Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda synagogue in Toronto, Canada.

 

Danto also had a concert career which included U.S. tours, including concerts at Carnegie Hall and he also toured Europe.  He has a prolific recorded legacy, which includes liturgical music, Yiddish songs, Operatic arias and lieder.
