Condition: Used, Refurbished, Fully Tested and Working. Hard drive comes with caddy, Windows 10 Home 64-Bit preinstalled and updated, and Lenovo ThinkPad T420 and T520 drivers installed. Since some T420 and T520 hardware configurations are different, you may have some drivers that still need to be downloaded and installed. Please note that we are not selling any software and that Windows 10 Home has been preinstalled for your convenience. It has not been activated. The buyer must have a Microsoft digital license or product key for Windows 10 Home. If Windows is not activated within 1 month, some features will no longer work. The buyer must have a Microsoft digital license or product key for the exact version of Windows 10 installed. These hard drives are for people who purchased a laptop with no hard drive or whose hard drives have crashed and do not have the Windows DVD to reinstall the operating system, but do have a license or key for the exact version of Windows installed. A license for any other version of Windows will not validate Windows 10 Home. If you don't own Windows 10 Home, but want to upgrade to it, you can purchase a license from Microsoft.

Virtual/Digital Windows 10 Licenses

A digital license is a virtual key. If you previously upgraded from an older version of Windows to Windows 10, you have what is known as a digital or virtual license. That means the Microsoft servers already know you have a Windows 10 license for that laptop, which is linked to serial numbers of several pieces of hardware they identified in your laptop and it will be automatically validated by Microsoft without you putting in an actual product key. While you do not need a physical product key in this case, you do need to know if you own Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Home as the installed version on the hard drive must match the version you own.

Can I install this hard drive in another model of laptop?

Yes, but the drivers installed are for the Lenovo ThinkPad T420 and T520 only. The hardware in any other model will be different, so if Windows 10 does not automatically install the drivers needed, you will have to find them and install them to get all your hardware working. Also, the caddy is only compatible with the Lenovo ThinkPad T400, T410, T420, T500, T510 and T520 only. The T420s, T420si and T520s models use a slimline 7mm hard drive only and a different caddy. 

Do I need to have a licence or product key for the exact version of Windows?

Yes. All Microsoft Windows licences are version specific.

Does it matter if I had the 32-Bit version installed before and now want the 64-Bit version?

No. A Windows license or key will validate either 32-Bit or 64-Bit version of that same OS. Even if you had 32-Bit installed before you can switch to the 64-Bit version.

What if I do not have a product key or want a version of Windows that is different from the one on my COA?

If you don't have a  license or key, or you want to upgrade to Windows 10, then you can purchase a Windows 10 license from Microsoft.
