DMAE Bitartrate is a salt of DMAE formed through the combination of tartaric acid and DMAE to make it more stable. DMAE became popular in the 1970's, after several studies had indicated its effect of providing cognitive support. DMAE is naturally found in small amounts in the brain and in larger amounts in some fish such as anchovies and sardines. That being said, the amounts present in the brain and fish are still rather small, which is why it may help to utilize another source of DMAE.

DMAE Bitartrate is highly regarded as a supplement that may support various brain functions such as short-term memory, concentration, and learning capacity. Molecularly, it is very similar to choline and is thought to stimulate production of acetylcholine, which is a brain neurotransmitter.

DMAE Bitartrate is also widely used as a cosmetic additive It is included in topical preparations, particularly creams and lotions, where it serves as a firming agent, tightening and toning the skin. Its role as an antioxidant also helps provide some anti-aging effects

DMAE Bitartrate is water soluble and should be added during the water phase of a formulation or during the cool down phase. Since DMAE Bitartrate is approximately composed of 37% DMAE (the rest is tartaric acid), it should be used at a maximum 8% concentration which would yield an actual concentration of 3% DMAE.
