BEAVER

Beaver is a popular image within Northwest Coast art and appears as a crest image in many regions. Beaver is respected for its industrious nature and is considered to be very wise.

According to one oral tradition, the first Beaver came into being through the transformation of a woman. The woman’s husband, driven by a desire to attain approval from his wife’s family, partook in long and frequent hunting trips in order to demonstrate his abilities as a provider. Swimming became the woman’s only escape from her feelings of loneliness. She expanded her pond by constructing a dam, built a water dwelling, and, in time, transformed into a Beaver.

Beaver is easily recognizable by a bear-like face, short snout, small ears, two large incisor teeth, and a cross-hatched tail that folds in front of the body.
