A little history written by Adriaan Bijl, The Importance of Panavision;

"Panavision started delivering its attachments in March 1954. Sales and distribution rights of the Super Panatar were held exclusively by Radiant Screen Corporation. The original price was $1100 a pair, but by July 1954 they were advertised at $895 a pair. By the end of 1954, the retail price of the Super Panatar was established at $695 a pair. Between March and May 1954, over 300 pairs of Super Panatar attachments were sold and delivered worldwide. Since not every theater was equipped with the required modifications for showing CinemaScope, every film had to be photographed in an anamorphic and a non-anamorphic, also known as "flat", version."
