Derived from the bark of the willow tree, Salicylic Acid has been used for thousands of years, with its first documented use occurring around 500 B.C. by the ancient Greeks. Historically used for pain relief (salicylic acid is closely related to salicin, which is the active ingredient in Aspirin), Salicylic Acid was not used for skin care until the 20th century.

Salicylic acid is a wonderful exfoliator for the skin and its anti-inflammatory properties help provide a soothing effect on the skin as well, which makes it extremely gentle on the skin when used as a peel. It is a common ingredient in skin care products that help with acne, remove oily residue from the skin, warts, and keratolytic therapy.

Salicylic Acid is a white crystalline powder that is oil soluble and slightly water soluble (up to 2%). It can be dissolved in benzyl or ethyl alcohol, as well as propylene glycol. If formulating a peel, consult a licensed dermatologist to help assist with the proper technique for application. Typical concentrations are 0.5% - 2%.

After applying a peel, apply a broad spectrum sunblock to any treated areas of the skin that may be exposed to the sun. Concentrations that exceed 2% may cause irritation or discomfort or even burns to the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth, this Salicylic Acid is intended for topical use only.
